Math Placement Test (Parts IA, P
AND LS)
General Information
The San Diego State University (SDSU) Math Placement Test consists of three parts (Parts IA, P and LS). You only take the part you need. Each part of the test is a timed 50 minute exam. Part IA has 25 questions. You need a score of 13 or higher to pass. Part P has 20 questions. You need a score of 11 or higher to pass. Part LS has two sections of 18 questions each. You need to get 11 or higher on each section to pass.
Part LS may be attempted only twice. Students who fail to pass the Part LS after two attempts must enroll in Mathematics 215.

Who Needs to Take the Math Placement Test?
Anyone who needs to meet the Math Placement prerequisite for certain math and statistics classes listed in the SDSU General Catalog. Passing Part IA is a prerequisite for many lower division Math and Statistics courses (for a complete list of courses needing Part IA go to Mathematics Prerequisite Requirements). Passing Part P is a prerequisite for Math 150 (Calculus I) at SDSU. (Note: Math 150 and most of the courses that require Part IA as a prerequisite also require completion of the Entry Level Mathematics requirement as well.) Part LS meets the Math Placement prerequisite for Mathematics 311 (Statistics and Probability in Elementary Mathematics) or Mathematics 312 (Topics from Elementary Mathematics).

Please Note: You must register for the Math Placement Test, regardless of the part you need. You will tell the test administrator which part you are taking on the day of the test.
