General Information

    The San Diego State University (SDSU) Liberal Studies Mathematics Proficiency Assessment has two sections of 18 questions each. Each section is separately timed. You will have 30 minutes to complete section 1 and 45 minutes to complete section 2.

    In order to pass the Assessment, you must receive a score of 11 or higher on both sections administered in the same session. Section scores cannot be combined with any prior attempts and students may not attempt just a single section to "make-up" a failing score on that portion only.

    Students who fail to pass the Liberal Studies Mathematics Proficiency Assessment after two attempts must enroll in Mathematics 215. Students completing Mathematics 215 will still need to pass the Assessment prior to enrolling in upper division mathematics courses for this program.

    Who Needs to Take the Liberal Studies Mathematics Proficiency Assessment?

    The Liberal Studies Mathematics Proficiency Assessment meets the Math Placement requirement for Mathematics 311 (Statistics and Probability in Elementary Mathematics), Mathematics 313 (Selected Topics in Elementary Mathematics) or Mathematics 315 (Selected topics in Algebra, Geometry, and Problem Solving). In addition to this assessement, students wishing to enroll in Mathematics 311, 313, or 315 must also be admintted to the Liberal Studies major.

    Come to the SDSU Testing, Assessment & Research Office (SSW-2549) during business hours (M-F 8:00 am - 4:30pm) and purchase a ticket. The fee for the Liberal Studies Mathematics Proficiency Assessment is $20.00. Tickets are non-refundable.
