General Information
The Grammar, Spelling and Punctuation (GSP) test is a way of determining whether or not students in the School of Journalism & Media Studies at San Diego State University (SDSU) have sufficient command of English to indicate probable success in the curricula and in related careers. The GSP consists of 100 multiple-choice questions in three areas: 33 questions covering grammar; 33 covering punctuation and the final 34 covering spelling. You need 80 (or more) correct to pass. It is a 90 minute timed test. You are allowed three attempts to pass the GSP.
Study Guides:
1) The most helpful guide is Grammar for Journalists, by E. L. Callihan, which is available at the SDSU campus bookstore. Any freshman composition text or handbook should also prove useful to prepare for the GSP.
2) Short Sample Test

Who Needs to Take the Grammar, Spelling and Punctuation (GSP) test?
If you are seeking admission to the impacted professional majors in the School of Journalism & Media Studies you must complete the test with a passing score. The GSP is required prior to enrolling in the classes of those impacted majors as determined by the school. (Note: Students who pass the SDSU Extended Studies class, Grammar for Journalism, will NOT have their GSP test requirement cleared.)
