General Information

The Grammar, Spelling and Punctuation (GSP) test is a way to determine whether students in the School of Journalism & Media Studies (JMS) at San Diego State University (SDSU) have sufficient command of English to indicate probable success in the curriculum and in related careers. The GSP consists of 100 multiple-choice questions in three areas: 33 questions cover grammar; 33 questions cover punctuation and the final 34 questions cover spelling. Students need 80 (or more) correct answers to pass the test, which is a 90-minute timed exam. Students are allowed three attempts to pass the GSP.

Who Needs to Take the Grammar, Spelling and Punctuation (GSP) test?

If you are seeking admission to the Advertising, Journalism or Public Relations majors in the School of Journalism & Media Studies, you must complete the test with a passing score. The GSP also is required prior to enrolling in JMS 220.

Registration Procedures

***Students Requiring Disability Accommodations please read!

Grammar, Spelling and Punctuation Test online registration (credit card or check). Online Registration hours of availability: 6:30 a.m. - midnight (PST)

OR

Fill out the GSP mail-in registration form

OR

Come to the SDSU Testing, Assessment & Research Office during business hours (Monday - Friday 8 am - 4:30pm) and purchase a ticket of admission. The fee for the GSP is $25.00. Tickets are non-refundable.
