COMPETENCY REQUIREMENTS:

Competency requirements are required preparation for a number of specific courses identified in the Class Schedule. No student shall graduate until all competency requirements are satisfied.

MATHEMATICS REQUIREMENTS: FRESHMEN

Demonstration of mathematics competency is satisfied in one of the following ways:
I. Pass one of the following national or state tests at the minimum score* or level identified below:

a. ELM score of 50 if taken after February 2002 (CSU Entry Level Mathematics Test). ELM score of 550 if taken before February 2002.
b. SAT or SAT I mathematics score of 550 (Scholastic Aptitude Test or Scholastic Assessment Test).
c. ACT mathematics test score of 23 (American College Test) if taken after October 1989.
d. AP score of 3 on mathematics AB or BC examination or the Statistics examination (The College Board Advanced Placement Program).
e. Score of 550 on the College Board Mathematics Achievement Test, Level I or IC or II or IIC.
f. Score of 550 on the College Board SAT II Mathematics Test, Level I or IC or II or IIC.

OR

II. Earn a "C" or better grade in a transferable college mathematics course that satisfies General Education Mathematics/Quantitative Reasoning.

OR

* These scores are appropriate only to those students who satisfy the requirement upon matriculation in this catalog year or who take the examinations during this catalog year.

III. Complete BOTH a and b

a. Attempt and fail the ELM test (CSU Entry Level Mathematics) (score below 50 if taken after February 2002 and score below 550 if taken before February 2002).

AND

b. Earn Credit (Cr) in General Mathematics Studies 91 or 99C at SDSU.

Credit earned in General Mathematics Studies courses numbered below 100 is not applicable to the baccalaureate degree.

REMEDIATION

Students who do not achieve a passing score on the Entry-Level Mathematics (ELM) examination must take remedial courses. Students must begin their remediation during the first semester, and must complete all needed remedial courses with a grade of CR by the end of their third term of enrollment (including summer term). The following chart shows which remedial courses must be taken based on the test scores:

MATHEMATICS REQUIREMENTS: TRANSFER STUDENTS

Transfer students generally fulfill their mathematics testing requirement by passing a transferable college level mathematics course with a "C" grade or better. Transfer students who do not meet this requirement will be held to the freshmen mathematics testing requirement.

MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENTAL PLACEMENT EXAMINATION

Students wishing to enroll in any logic, mathematics, physics, statistics, or mathematically related course must pass the appropriate part of the Mathematics Departmental Placement Examination. These examinations assess mathematical preparation beyond the elementary level. Part IA tests knowledge of intermediate algebra; the Precalculus Proficiency Examination tests knowledge of algebra and trigonometry as needed in calculus; Part LS tests numbers and operations, geometry and measurement. Equivalent transfer courses will not grant exemptions from any part of the Placement Examination.

The Mathematics Departmental Placement Examination will be given on the SDSU campus on the following dates. Students must register at the Test Office by the deadline date.

WRITING REQUIREMENTS: FRESHMEN

b. SAT I verbal score of 550 if taken after March 1995 (Scholastic Aptitude Test or Scholastic Assessment Test). SAT or SAT I verbal score of 470 if taken before March 1995.
c. ACT English usage score of 24 (American College Test) if taken after October 1989.
d. AP score of 3 on Language and Composition or Literature and Composition (The College Board Advanced Placement Program).
e. Score of 600 on the College Board Achievement Test in English Composition with Essay.
f. Score of 680 on the College Board SAT II Writing Test if taken May 1998 and after. Score of 660 on the College Board SAT II Writing Test if taken between April 1995 and April 1998. Score of 600 on the College Board SAT II Writing Test if taken before March 1995.

REMEDIATION

Students who do not achieve a passing score on the English Placement Test (EPT) must take remedial courses. GRADUATION WRITING ASSESSMENT REQUIREMENT

All undergraduates must demonstrate competency in writing skills at the upper division level as a requirement for the baccalaureate degree and, if not previously met in the CSU, for a second baccalaureate degree

1. All students shall take the Writing Proficiency Assessment (WPA) during the semester in which they achieve 60 units or in the semester immediately following. Students who do not take the exam within the required period will be administratively disqualified.
2. Students are allowed to attempt the WPA twice.
3. Students who achieve a score of 10 or above on the WPA shall satisfy the graduation writing proficiency requirement or are cleared to enroll in the upper division writing course required by their major.
4. Students who achieve a score of 8 or 9 are required to satisfy the graduation writing proficiency requirement by completing an approved upper division writing course (selected from the list below) with a grade of C or higher.
5. Students who earn a score of 7 or lower are required to complete Rhetoric and Writing Studies 280 or 281 with a minimum grade of C or higher before enrolling in the required upper division writing course.
6. Students who transfer from another CSU campus having fulfilled the Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement will not be required to repeat it. However, a course listed below may be required for the major.

JOURNALISM (School of Communication)

This test is required for admission to the impacted professional communication majors, and prior to enrolling in all advanced skills classes in the impacted majors. Students must pass the test prior to registration. STUDENTS ARE ALLOWED THREE ATTEMPTS TO PASS THE GRAMMAR, SPELLING, AND PUNCTUATION (GSP) TEST.

The NLN Nursing Mobility Profile II tests are used to determine academic adjustments for RN’s seeking a BS degree from the School of Nursing. Students must complete the examinations in order to progress in the RN-BS program. EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY - COMPUTER EDUCATION

The State of California now requires that future teachers complete a computer education requirement in order to receive the Preliminary teaching credential.
EDTEC 470, Technologies for Teaching, has been designed to fulfill this requirement.

Some education students will already have skills and knowledge in integrating technology into classroom instruction. These students may elect to challenge the course by completing a test. To prepare for the waiver test, students may wish to study the activities and materials on the course Web site at: edweb.sdsu.edu/courses/edtec470/.

EDTEC 470 PROFICIENCY TEST

The test takes two hours to complete and consists of objective items. Short essay questions describing how one would use technology in a specific situation, and a demonstration of the ability to use Productivity software typically found in schools. Students must register at the Test Office. Registration must take place by the deadline date:

LIBERAL STUDIES ASSESSMENT PORTFOLIO

Satisfactory completion of an assessment portfolio is a graduation requirement for the Liberal Studies major. Students are introduced to the portfolio during orientation and as a part of the Liberal Studies 300 class. Additional information is available on the Web site at http://dus.sdsu.edu/liberalstudies. Sample portfolios are available in the Liberal Studies Program Office. The semester before a student intends to graduate, he/she should enroll in Liberal Studies 498 (0.5 unit), a series of special workshops which deal with the expectations for the various entries.

Mandatory "portfolio check-off" sessions are held during the week prior to the deadline. For directions and to sign-up, go to the Liberal Studies Program Office.

Portfolios must be submitted to the Test Office by Monday, June 21 for Summer 2004 graduation and by Monday, September 27 for Fall 2004 graduation.

ADVANCED DEGREE EXAMINATIONS

For information on required tests, contact the major department or the Graduate Division. Sign up for specific tests at the Test Office at least five weeks prior to test date.

All students, whether freshmen or transfer, are required to demonstrate competency in basic mathematics and standard written English. Incoming students who are not exempt from the CSU Entry Level Mathematics examination (ELM) and/or the English Placement Test (EPT) because of national test scores or college level courses (see explanation of exemptions below) must take these tests PRIOR to registration in any courses. Those who fail one or both of these examinations are REQUIRED to be enrolled in appropriate sections of General Mathematics and/or Rhetoric and Writing Studies courses in the FIRST semester of enrollment. Students who do not successfully remediate both the ELM and EPT by the end of the third term of enrollment are subject to disenrollment (including summer term).
