AMERICAN INSTITUTIONS The American Institutions graduation requirement may be satisfied by completion of certain courses or a combination of courses and the California Government examination. See the current General Catalog for details. The dates on which the California Government examination will be given are as follows. Students must register at the Test Office by the deadline date.
CHEMISTRY Passing the Chemistry Department Placement Exam is a prerequisite to register for Chemistry 200 or 202 at SDSU. (Note: Chemistry 200 or 202 also requires completion of the Entry Level Mathematics requirement prior to enrollment as well.)
JOURNALISM (School of Journalism & Media Studies) This test is required for admission to the impacted professional majors in the School of Journalism & Media Studies and prior to enrolling in all advanced skills classes in those impacted majors. Students must pass the test prior to registration. STUDENTS ARE ALLOWED THREE ATTEMPTS TO PASS THE GRAMMAR, SPELLING, AND PUNCTUATION (GSP) TEST. Students may take a test preparation class through the College of Extended Studies, " Grammar for Journalists". Check the General Catalog for course prerequisites or call the School of Journalism & Media Studies at (619-594-5450) for course information. Students must register at the Test Office by the deadline date.
The French proficiency examinations are taken (a) as a challenge exam to satisfy the Foreign Language Graduation Requirement for liberal arts and science majors (b) to waive specific 200-level French courses which are prerequisites for more advanced classes (c) or to waive French 301 and/or French 302. The Japanese language proficiency test is taken to assess the proficiency level and to place students at the most appropriate level in the curriculum of the Japanese language program at San Diego State University. Students who have special backgrounds, and those SDSU students who took Japanese elsewhere, including SDSU students who participated in exchange programs, are required to take this examination. For more information, please contact the Japanese language adviser in the Department of Linguistics and Oriental Languages.

The Spanish proficiency examination is taken to satisfy the foreign language requirement for Liberal Arts and Science Majors. Contact the Spanish Department for more information.
EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY - COMPUTER EDUCATION The State of California now requires that future teachers complete a computer education requirement in order to receive the preliminary teaching credential. EDTEC 470, Technologies for Teaching, has been designed to fulfill this requirement. Some education students will already have skills and knowledge in integrating technology into classroom instruction. These students may elect to challenge the course by completing a test. Additional information about the test may be found at http://edweb.sdsu.edu/courses/edtec470/about.htm To prepare for the waiver test, students may wish to study the activities and materials on the course Web site at: edweb.sdsu.edu/courses/edtec470/. The test takes two hours to complete and consists of objective items, short essay questions describing how one would use technology in a specific situation, and a demonstration of the ability to use productivity software typically found in schools.
