Renewing a Student Organization
Renewing your on-campus status from last year? Your 06-07 recognition expires on September 30, 2007, so make sure to fulfill all of these steps and turn in the 07-08 organization application prior to that date so you do not lose your recognition or any room reservations that you have made.
Follow these steps:
- Carefully read and fill out the Fall '07-Spring '08 Student Organization Recognition Application available by clicking here (link to Student Organization Application here) or in Student Activities and Campus Life, Student Services West, room 1661.
- One student organization officer MUST attend an orientation session (see dates/times below)
- For Your On-Campus Faculty/Staff Advisor:
- Are you applying to serve as a new faculty/staff advisor?
If yes, you MUST attend an orientation session (see dates/times below). All student organizations are required to have an eligible on-campus SDSU staff or faculty advisor. Advisor's must be either part-time or full-time employees. Auxiliary staff and student assistants are not eligible to serve as advisors. Employee eligibility and confirmation of their status is verified when organizations apply for official recognition status. The advisor must also attend a mandatory advisor orientation. The advisor is an integral part of the organization, and he or she should be someone who is familiar with your group's area of interest or mission. - Are you a continuing faculty/staff advisor who has already attended orientation in 06-07?
If yes, you do not need to attend orientation again this year. You will find Advisor Resources online. Any new policy updates will be posted to our website. Please check in monthly for any related changes. Please contact our office if you are unsure of your orientation attendance status.
- Are you applying to serve as a new faculty/staff advisor?
- Create/Obtain the organizations constitution/bylaws. You must submit a complete copy of your organization's official local constitution and/or bylaws. If your organization is affiliated with a national, state or local organization, you must also submit all governing documents (constitution, bylaws, etc.) of the national, state or local organization that specify membership eligibility, qualifications and privileges.
Student Organization Bylaws Template (MSWord file)- Your local bylaws MUST include the following non-discrimination statement: "Eligibility for membership or appointed or elected officer positions may not be limited on the basis of race, religion, national origin, ethnicity, color, age, gender, marital status, citizenship, sexual orientation, or disability and no rules or policies shall discriminate on any of these grounds." [Social fraternities and sororities are permitted by federal law to restrict membership on the basis of gender.]
- Meet with a Student Activities and Campus Life Advisor (Student Services West, room 1661) to review and submit the application. Completed applications will be submitted for review and approval.
- An email confirmation will be sent to inform you of the organization's recognition status.
