Questions and Answers

How do I notify the university that I have a disability and need accommodations?
After you receive notification of your provisional admission, download the Application for Services and the Disability Questionnaire for learning and other cognitive disabilities or the Disability Verification Form (Physical). The Disability Verification Form must be completed by an appropriate professional.
Is the confidentiality of a student’s records/status maintained through the Student Disability Services office?
No information is released to outside parties from Disabled Student Services without written consent from the student. Furthermore, no record of disability status appears on any academic transcript or permanent document maintained by the Office of the Registrar.
How long are a student’s records maintained in the Student Disability Services office?
Documentation of a permanent disability is maintained for five (5) years. Documentation of a temporary disability is maintained for up to one (1) year.
Are registration fees waived at SDSU for students with disabilities?
No. Students with disabilities are responsible for the same fees/payments as all other students attending the University.
Are the Residence Halls accessible and available to disabled students?
Yes. When requesting on-campus housing, indicate on your housing application any special accommodations (i.e., wheelchair accessibility, doorbell and telephone signalers, etc.) you may require.
Is there a fee for services through the Student Disability Services office?
No. Services are authorized appropriate to each student's disability and provided without charge.
Are there special financial aid packages, scholarships, etc. available to students with disabilities?
Information regarding financial assistance for all students is available from the Office of Financial Aid Office and Scholarships. Other resources may include the State Department of Rehabilitation and the Social Security Administration.
Does the University have a specific class requirement for students with disabilities?
No. The requirements for graduation are clearly listed in the San Diego State University catalogue.
Where do students with disabilities obtain academic services?
Academic advising is available to all students at the University Advising Center located in the Student Services building, Room 1641. Other advising services are listed in the Class Schedule and Student Handbook in the section entitled “Academic Advising and Advising Centers.”
Does San Diego State University waive course and/or test requirements for students with disabilities?
No. All students must meet both the course and test requirements for graduation. In rare instances, students may petition to have a graduation requirements substituted with appropriate coursework for disability related reasons.
How do I go about using the services offered by Student Disability Services?
Once your eligibility for services has been determined, you will be notified by mail. This letter will include information regarding your next step in the eligibility process.
