Responsibilities of Faculty for Providing Academic Accommodations

Excerpted from the SDSU Policy Guide: Providing Academic Accommodations for Students with Disabilities

• Faculty will cooperate with SDS in providing authorized accommodations and/or support services for the student in a fair and timely manner.
• Faculty will review the Authorization for Accommodations Form with each eligible student.
• Faculty will review, complete, and sign the Reservation for Test Accommodation form so that the student with a disability can return the form to SDS one week prior to each exam requiring accommodation.
• Faculty will consult with a representative of SDS if there is any question regarding how to implement the authorized accommodations.
• Faculty will allow tape recording of course content by a student with a disability when it has been determined that this is the most effective way to provide equal access to course material. (The student may be required to sign an agreement protecting copyright.)
• Faculty will provide a classroom atmosphere which is harassment-free in nature and nondiscriminatory for students with disabilities.
• Faculty are advised to make an announcement at the beginning of each semester encouraging students with disabilities who need support services to identify themselves to the instructor. It is suggested that faculty provide time during office hours or in a private setting to protect student confidentiality.
