As a service to SDSU students, the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships provides a list of Internet Web sites that offer free online scholarship searches. Also listed are scholarships, grants, internships, stipends, and fellowship opportunities that are not administered through this department but are available to SDSU students.
BEWARE of people or organizations wanting to charge you for a scholarship or financial aid search. Scholarship and financial aid searches should ALWAYS be FREE!
The U. S. Department of Education offers good information and tips on how to spot a scholarship scam.
Be creative in your search. You should investigate every possible affiliation you have such as organizations in your community, family associations, friends, employers, and religion.
Check the SDSU Love Library, PAC online. Use relevant key words or phrases to search. For example: Scholarships; Fellowships; Grants-in-Aid; Endowments – Directories; Corporations – United States – Charitable Contributions.
Visit bookstores and other libraries. The reference section of any major bookstore or public library may also have scholarship books and additional information.
Start your research early. The sooner you begin organizing your information and resources, the better your chances will be that you will find scholarship opportunities.
Be involved. Scholarship committees look favorably upon applicants who participate in extra-curricular activities, volunteer or help others in some way.
Gather letters of recommendation. Many scholarships want letters of recommendation. Ask teachers, civic leaders, religious advisors, mentors, and business managers for written endorsements on their organizations stationery or letterhead.
Apply if you are qualified. Request applications for any scholarships for which you are eligible. If you do not meet the minimum requirements, don't waste your time applying. Use that time to perfect scholarship applications for which you do qualify.
Attach a cover letter. If the scholarship does not require an essay you can still attach a well-written cover letter summarizing your educational goals, your background and your accomplishments.
Create a checklist. Make notes of every piece of support material required by the scholarship. From the notes, make a list, then check the items on the list as you assemble the application.
Make photocopies. When your application is complete and ready to send off to the scholarship committee, make copies for your records. You may find them to be valuable as resources for future applications.
Meet the deadline. Scholarship committees do not accept late applications. Being late reflects poorly on your abilities, judgment, and potential.
The organizations listed in this section provide scholarship opportunities available to SDSU students that are not administered through this department.
A brief overview of the scholarship(s)' main requirement(s) follows each scholarship name. Click on the name to link to the organization's Web site for complete details and the application. Read the organization's requirements carefully.
Some of the scholarships link to application forms available in Adobe PDF format. To open these applications, you will need a copy of the free Acrobat Reader available from Adobe's Web site. If you have Reader, but find you are having problems, go to Adobe's Web site and download the latest version of Reader.
Most of the organizations listed offer scholarships every year, so if you missed a deadline, be sure to check back again.
