The SDSU Ambassadors have kicked off another fall semester and look forward to serving the university and the community in the 2007-2008 academic year. The executive officers have committed themselves to working hard and are dedicated to model the organizations vision: "To Interact, Impact, and Inspire." This vision statement for Ambassadors was developed last spring at our annual Spring Retreat "Wolahi" to further guide the organization's purpose.
The executive officers for the 2007-2008 are a group of six women elected to lead the Ambassadors into another successful year. Our current officers are:
They are committed to preserving the high level of respect the Ambassadors receive on campus and will continue to uphold the many traditions still recognized in the organization.
The Ambassadors have relocated to a much-improved working space. The Office of New Student and Parent Programs is located in the Student Services building, room 1602, formerly the location of the Student Resource Center, Office of Student Life and Development, and Centers for Student Involvement. The remodel has allowed for the Office of New Student and Parent Programs to have a "work room" for New Student Orientation to stuff packets, store materials, etc. During the academic year, the Ambassadors utilize that space for their office. The décor of the office still remains Ambassador and Orientation Leader photographs and organization plaques dating back to 1989! If you are ever on campus, stop by and visit.
Currently, the Ambassadors are in the middle of their recruitment process. The Ambassadors continue to recruit a diverse group of students from many different areas on campus. The selection process takes place over two months with application readings, interviews, and an interactive session, in which the selection team has the opportunity to see how potential Ambassadors work together as a team. The rookie class of 2008 will officially be welcomed to the organization at our Rookie Welcome Fundraiser on Monday, November 26 at Chevys in Mission Valley. Alumni are welcome to come interact with current Ambassadors, new rookies, and support the organization!
The Ambassadors officially kicked off the academic year at their Fall Retreat on Saturday, September 15 at Kate Sessions Park in Pacific Beach. For the past few years the Ambassadors have tied in Fall Retreat theme to coincide with Homecoming Activities. This year, Fall Retreat, "Ambos Back in Black (and Red)" aligns with this years Homecoming theme "Rock 'n' Roll." The Ambassadors were well represented at all Homecoming Festivities and proudly placed second in the student organization competition, placing first in some events. Five total Ambassadors were selected for the 2007 Homecoming Court, including both candidates nominated by the SDSU Ambassadors. Our very own Teressa Martel was selected as Homecoming Queen, representing the Unviersity Honors Program.
Community service remains a high priority to the organization. More than 35 Ambassadors walked in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk in October, raising more than $1,500.
As always, the fall semester is a busy time for Ambassadors to work at various events on campus and giving tours. Since the beginning of summer, the Ambassadors have already given tours to more than 6,000 people. They have worked various events such as University Seminar classes, University House events, and Family Weekend.
The Ambassadors are always looking for new opportunities to serve the university and San Diego community. If you are in the local community and would like Ambassadors to volunteer for service events or represent San Diego State University, please contact them at ambassad@mail.sdsu.edu or by phone at (619) 594-6868.
