Student Affairs Fall Recap

The Division of Student Affairs has been extremely busy since summer and throughout the fall semester providing a wide array of programs to new and returning students. Below are some statistics from this year’s events:

Orientation

Mom and daughter check in at OrientationThe census and final orientation numbers are confirmed and the evaluation results for New Student Orientation have been tabulated. At orientation, we saw 93.8 percent of first-time freshmen and 85.3 percent of the new transfer students who enrolled for fall 2008. In addition, we served approximately 5,300 parents and guests during Parent Orientation, for an overall total of 11,881 students and parents.

In addition, 96.1 percent of students who attended orientation would recommend attending New Student Orientation to future students and 98.2 percent of parents would recommend attending Parent Orientation to future parents.

Residence Hall Move-in

A student moves his belongings into Chapultepec Hall.The Residential Education Office welcomed more than 4,200 students into the residence halls the weekend before classes began. They had a record 400 returning students, at 25 percent, marking the largest number of returners recorded.

New Student and Family Convocation

A dad shows his SDSU spirit at convocation.More than 7,000 new students and their family members attended the 2008 New Student and Family Convocation, held on August 30 of this year.


Ask Me Tents/Welcome Week/Aztec Nights

Students get their free lunch at the Aztec Bash. Welcome Week and Aztec Nights served Thousands of new and returning students. The Ask Me! Tents, part of Welcome Week, answered questions and pointed students in the right direction. More than 2,000 students attended the Aztec Bash, in which Vice President Kitchen donned his chef’s hat and barbecued hamburgers. More than 4,500 students attended the Red and Black Welcome Dance; 3,000 attended the Swayze concert; 3,000 attended the Carnivale; and more than 1,100 students attended the first movie night.

Family Weekend

A family enjoys the food at the picnic.Family Weekend was held the last weekend in September and welcomed more than 500 families, translating to more than 1,800 people. The largest event was the Friday night Picnic and Serenade, in which almost 600 people attended.
