Program Description
Sharif Rahman Scholarships
London is an exciting city in which to live and study. Among the world's most beautiful capitals, it is rich in art, music, theater and literary history. It is the seat of British government and the world's longest surviving monarchy.
More than 40 theaters provide unrivaled opportunities for students to experience live, professional productions. Four major symphony orchestras and two opera companies reside in London. For followers of contemporary music, London offers an unparalleled range of live rock and ethnic music performances. A wide variety of museums and galleries provide opportunities to view many of the world's artistic masterpieces.
London University alone has more than 50,000 students and many more are enrolled at other universities, colleges and specialized schools. Students bring a more global perspective to their home campuses after experiencing the London Study Program.
London Study Center
Foundation House, its teaching facilities and student housing are located in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, one of the most prestigious districts in London. In the immediate neighborhood surrounding Foundation House and Metrogate Study Center (student residence) are to be found some of London's most famous streets, academic institutions and cultural treasure houses where youth culture mixes with historical tradition.
Students live and study in the shadows of some of the world's great cultural institutions, the Royal Albert Hall, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Natural History Museum. On the doorstep are the Imperial College, the Royal College of Art and the Royal College of Music. Incidentally, London plays host to over one-fifth of the UK's student population.
Kensington is a residential area of unparalleled charm and architectural beauty, a mixture of small alleyways and grand boulevards, where the ghosts of famous past residents such as T.S. Eliot, Charles Booth and Beatrix Potter mingle with those of the present. The streets are dotted with pubs--agreat British tradition--restaurants and all the amenities.
London has the oldest and most comprehensive public transportation system in the world and Foundation is served by three major Underground stations--Gloucester Road, South Kensington, and High Street Kensington while the West End is just 15 minutes away. In addition, the bus network runs all night.
If the bustle of the city becomes overwhelming, there are always the parks--breathing space and time to think and relax! Kensington Gardens with its lake, Italian Fountains and Kensington Palace is within minutes walking distance of Foundation House. Adjoining Kensington Gardens is London's most famous Hyde Park which runs all the way to Speaker's Corner and the start of the West End. And Holland Park, just off Kensington High Street, plays host to an opera season in the summer and the serenity of the Japanese Garden all year round. | | | | Back to United Kingdom Homepage |

Course Information
PROFILE: The Duncan of Jordanston College, offers a wide variety of art study. In particular, the current portfolio of undergraduate and postgraduate courses will be extended to encompass new technologies and the needs of emerging creative industries. The School's research activity will underpin these developments by focusing on the key drivers of change within the design disciplines.
- All courses operate on a credit-based system, facilitating transfer to U.S. credits.
- Town-center campus, most buildings within a 10-minute walk.
- Excellent modern library incorporating 500,000 books and research facilities.
LOCALE: With a population of 150,000 Dundee is large enough to support all of the activities expected of a major city but small enough not to be overwhelming or impersonal for those coming to live or study here. This is enhanced by the quality of life here with the hills to the north and several miles of sandy beaches to the south, as well as some 1,300 acres of parkland.
The College is located on the main campus of the University of Dundee, a leisurely 10-minute walk from the city centre, the bus station or railway station. Diversion of through traffic has created a peaceful atmosphere which is conducive to study and strengthens the sense of belonging to a distinct community.
Professor Tom Inns is the Head of the School of Design, which is the largest School within the Faculty of Duncan of Jordanstone with over 400 undergraduates, 20 postgraduates, and 30 FTE staff. In 1995 the School received an 'Excellent' in the SHEFC Teaching Quality Assessment and in 1996 achieved the highest rating of '5' in the Research Assessment Exercise.
In the new century the School of Design is focusing on consolidating and extending its leading position in design education and research
DIVISIONS: College of Jordanston, Architecture, Design (Annimation/Electronic Media, Graphic, Illustration and Printmaking, Jewellry and Metalwork, Printed Textiles), Interior and Environmental Design, Fine Arts (Ceramics, Constructed Textiles, Drawing and Painting, Printmaking, Sculpture, Time Based Art)
HOUSING: University of Dundee and Duncan of Jordanston offer accommodation to all single entrant students starting courses in September/October who send their application form by 15th September. They try to meet the needs of those applying after this date and would normally be able to do so, but cannot guarantee it.
The sense of belonging to a distinct community is strengthened by the fact that the majority of the Halls, Houses and Flats are either on the campus or lie within a relatively short walking distance. Therefore, students have a comfortable base where they can settle in quickly and meet new friends. A majority of residents will be at a similar stage in their academic career, although studying a variety of courses, and this leads to interesting and lively discussions round the dining table.
It is a widely held view that halls of residence (catered or self-catering) offer the best possible introduction to University life, providing all the opportunities to make new friends, develop new interests and concentrate on academic progression within the reassuring Hall environment. http://www.dundee.ac.uk/prospectus/undergrad2002/general/accom.htm
