    Profile: The University of Central Lancashire plays a leading role in the provision of higher education in northwest England. Facilities include the computer center, library and a large student union complex. Total enrollment: 16,000 full-time.

    Locale: The ancient market town of Preston is located in an agricultural area of west Lancashire, northwest of an industrial region. It is located 10 miles from the coast and to the northis the beautiful Lake District. Preston is a major focus of road and rail communications, with London and Glasgow only three hours away. Liverpool, Manchester and the Lake District are also close by.

    Combined Honours Program - The combined honours program has subjects on a modular basis, resembling the U.S. course system.     Profile: Founded by Victorian philanthropists in 1841, as a society for the education of young men and granted university status in 1992, the University has a long tradition of welcoming students from all over the world. The total student population is approximately 17,000 (part-time and full-time).

    The main Queensgate Campus is situated in the town center, with all shops and amenities close at hand. The Huddersfield Narrow Canal flows through the campus, bordered by former textile mills converted to high-tech educational use.

    Locale: The University is located in a thriving West Yorkshire town. Situated at the heart of the UK, Huddersfield is easily accessible by road, rail and air. London is just over two hours away by train. The town has a distinct identity of its own and is within easy reach of major cities such as Leeds and Manchester.

    Profile: Napier University, which takes its name from the famous sixteenth century mathematician John Napier, was founded in 1964 and achieved University status in 1992. In just three decades it has progressed from first-class polytechnic to major Scottish university and one of the top new universities in the UK. Its "newest" campus, the magnificent historical buildings and landscaped grounds of Craighouse, is perhaps the UK's finest. Napier University's five Faculties (Arts and Social Science; Engineering and Computing; Business School; Science; and Health Studies) offer a wide range of professionally oriented undergraduate and graduate programmes. These are designed in consultation with commerce and industry and many allow students to integrate study and work experience. Total enrollment: 11,500 (including 900 international students).

    Locale: Napier is a multi-campus institution situated within Scotland's beautiful and cosmopolitan capital city of Edinburgh. In addition to being home to the new Scottish Parliament, Edinburgh hosts the largest international arts festival in the world and offers numerous cinemas, theatres, restaurants, bars, clubs and shops. At the heart of the city is the famous Edinburgh castle, surrounded by a mixture of medieval and Georgian architecture. Located one hour by air and four hours by train from London, Edinburgh is an ideal base from which to explore the breathtaking scenery of the Scottish highlands and islands; it also provides a good communications hub for travel to other parts of Britain, Ireland and continental Europe.

    Academic notes: Napier University has particular strengths in the fields of Business and Management; Communication Arts (e.g. Journalism, Publishing, Communication, Photography Film & TV, Design, Music); Biological and Health Sciences; and Computing / IT. Napier's graduates have a high record of employment, demonstrating the University's achievement of its primary mission: preparing students for the world of work. There is fairly strong competition for exchange places in the Communication Arts field, but applications from students of all academic disciplines are encouraged. Napier has a modular structure allowing visiting students to devise programmes tailored to their own (and their home institution's) needs. Modules (courses) in most academic disciplines can be combined with one another. The normal workload is 4 modules per semester.

    Room and board: University housing is situated within easy reach of the city center and is mainly composed of modern apartments providing the privacy of individual study bedrooms with a shared lounge/kitchen for cooking and socialising. Welcome packs consisting of bedding, crockery, cutlery etc. are provided to international students staying in University housing. A stipend is provided to purchase or prepare meals.

    Profile: Bournemouth University is a modern and dynamic institution. Over 14,000 students are currently pursuing programs at the University, including 1,000 international students from over 120 countries. Bournemouth University has one large campus just outside the center of Bournemouth and a smaller one within the town center.

    Locale: Bournemouth is located on the south coast of England less than 2 hours from London (by road or rail). Surrounded by stunning countryside and with 7.5 miles of clean golden beaches, Bournemouth is a vibrant and cosmopolitan seaside town. It is big enough to offer all the amenities you would expect from a large modern town and yet small enough to maintain a safe and friendly environment.

    Profile: Founded in 1839, and linked with the University of Liverpool for almost 100 years, University College, Chester offers undergraduate and postgraduate degree study to around 7,000 students. Chester has excellent teaching, study and recreational facilities, including a modern library, ample open access computer facilities, and a range of sports and fitness opportunities.

    Locale: Chester is a small and beautiful city in the northwest of England, forty minutes from the large cities of Liverpool and Manchester. It is one of Britain's leading tourist centers, whose attractions include the Roman walls, a magnificent Cathedral, the world-famous Tudor 'Rows' (covered galleries of shops), and the River Dee. There is easy access to the famous beauty spots of the Lakes, North Wales.

    Divisions: Arts and Humanities (art, English, history, media, modern languages, performing arts, theology & religious studies); Science and Health (biological sciences [including dietetics], business & management, computer science & information sciences, geography, mathematics, physical education & sports science, exercise & nutrition science, psychology, social & communication studies); Education (initial teacher training, continuing professional development); Nursing and Midwifery.

    Academic notes: Work-based placements are built in to all undergraduate programs. Chester's graduates have an impressive employment record, locally and nationally. There is a range of new and innovative degree programs, including media studies, journalism, criminology, fine art: new media, and e-business.

    Room and board: Full-board accommodation is mostly on-campus. The College also offers (on or near the campus) a range of self-catering flats and houses (single rooms with shared facilities).

    Profile and locale: The University of Ulster has four campuses: Belfast, Coleraine, Jordanstown and Magee College. Students will be placed according to their academic needs. It is not possible for students to study at more than one campus at any one time. Public transportation links the campuses.

    Divisions: Arts (American studies, design, English, fine art, French, German, history, Irish studies, media studies, music, peace studies, philosophy, Spanish, textiles and fashion design, theatre studies, visual communication, West European studies); Business and Management (accounting, banking and finance, consumer studies, hospitality management, hotel and tourism management, marketing and business organization, public administration); Engineering and Built Environment (architectural technology, building, civil engineering, electrical and electronic engineering, environmental health, estate management, manufacturing, mechanical engineering, surveying, transport technology); Informatics (computing science, information systems, mathematics); Life and Health Sciences (applied medical sciences, biological science, biomedical science, environmental science, biomedical science, nursing, psychology, rehabilitation sciences, sports studies); Social Sciences (communication, economics, law, policy studies, politics, sociology and applied social studies).

    Academic notes: The university is a community-based, comprehensive institution that stresses academic programs, social service and vocational, technical and professional training. Applied training in the arts, business, health, science, social science and technology is available. 

    Room and board: Students at Jordanstown, Coleraine, and Magee College will normally be housed on campus in single-occupancy bedroom-studies in residence halls or student houses. Cooking facilities are available; a stipend will be provided for meals. Students at the Belfast campus will be assisted in finding suitable off-campus accommodation near the university. 

    Exchange dates: Academic year: late September to late May; Semester 1: late September to late January; Semester 2: late January to late May. 

    Special conditions: Media studies and education are closed to ISEP students. Also, due to restrictions on professional training, students may not be able to major in health sciences such as nursing, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and social work.

    University of Ulster-Belfast
    Belfast (pop. 280,000)
    The Belfast campus houses the Faculty of Art and Design. There are many social and cultural activities in the capital of Northern Ireland. Southern Belfast, where most student accommodations are found, has excellent, yet moderately-priced, restaurants, pubs, theaters and shops. About a mile from campus is a sister institution, the Queen's University. Students at the Belfast campus can use the fine recreation facilities at the larger Jordanstown campus. Transportation between the two sites is quick and frequent. Total enrollment: 1,000 students.

    University of Ulster-Coleraine
    Coleraine (pop. 25,000)
    The university headquarters are located to the north of Coleraine, a pleasant market town. The surrounding farmland and forest parks, the River Bann that borders the campus and the beaches of the north coast offer opportunities for hiking, fishing and boating. Total enrollment: 4,500 students.

    University of Ulster-Jordanstown
    Newtownabbey (pop. 75,000)
    The Jordanstown campus is at Newtownabbey, County Antrim, seven miles north of Belfast. Newtownabbey, surrounded by new housing developments, groups several old mill villages and towns along the north shore of the Belfast Lough, an inlet of the Irish Sea. The campus is a self-contained village on 114 acres. The main building has a bank, supermarket, and four restaurants. Sports and recreation facilities include a campus sports center and nearby Jordanstown Lough Shore Park. Total enrollment: 11,500 students.

    University of Ulster-Magee College
    Londonderry (pop. 60,000)
    Magee College is located in the city of Londonderry on a wooded hillside overlooking the River Foyle. Total enrollment: 2,800 students.

    Plymouth, England (pop. 300,000)

    Course information

    Profile: The university has four main campuses: Plymouth (Business, Human Sciences, Science, Technology), Seale-Hayne (Land, Food & Leisure), Exeter (Art and Design) and Exmouth (Education and Humanities). The university enrolls full-time students from all over the British Isles and has a tradition of postgraduate research. Total enrollment: 27,000 (including 1,800 international students).

    Locale: The city of Plymouth is on the coast, near the many small fishing villages of Cornwall. Plymouth is the major city of the southwest and offers cultural attractions such as museums and professional theater. It is a three hours' rail trip from London and also offers a ferry link to mainland Europe. A natural harbor, Plymouth was the port from which the Pilgrims sailed in 1620. Some of the oldest remnants of civilization still exist in the Southwest, including standing stone circles of which Stonehenge is the best known. Area sporting facilities include sailing, windsurfing and horseback riding in Dartmoor National Park.

    Divisions: Business School (business studies, economics, management studies, modern language unit); Faculties of Land, Food and Leisure (agriculture, hospitality, tourism, food technology); Art; Human Sciences (community studies, health, international relations, psychology, social and political studies, social work); Science (biology, environmental science, geography, geology, marine science, shipping and transport); Technology (civil, communication, computing, electrical/electronic/mechanical engineering, mathematics, statistics).

    Academic notes: Students in business, science and technical fields are strongly encouraged. Many courses in maritime studies and science are complemented by field trips including fishing and diving expeditions. The Combined Arts Program at Exeter and Exmouth, consisting of majors in art history, cultural practice, English, heritage, history, media arts, theatre, and visual arts, welcomes ISEP students.

    ISEP participants will be accepted for study by a relevant faculty. Students will only be able to take a combination of courses currently available on recognized pathways. Some faculties cannot accept students for SM2 due to the design of their courses and pre-requisite requirements. Cross-registration for modules taught in different courses (programs) is not possible. Students must select all modules from one particular course.

    Language notes: Multilateral applicants who are not native English speakers must submit a minimum official TOEFL of 550 (213 CBT) for undergraduate admission.

    Room and board: Students will be offered the full range of housing, including residence halls, shared student houses, or home-stays with families. A stipend is provided to purchase or prepare meals.

    Exchange dates: Academic year: late September to mid-June.

    Special conditions: The Education division is closed to ISEP students.

    Profile: The origins of higher education in Sunderland can be traced back to 1860 when the School of Science and Art was founded. Over the years, various mergers took place increasing the size of the institution. The award of university status coincided with the designation of Sunderland as Britain's newest city. The University of Sunderland has more than 15,000 students, and welcomes over 1,000 international students from nearly 60 countries. A wide range of courses is offered, from diplomas to bachelor's and master's degrees; postgraduate and PhD research programs. Taught programs in the University are based upon a modular structure allowing most students scope to tailor their degree to their exact requirements. 

    Locale: Sunderland is located on the northeast coast of England with easy access to the nearby coast and countryside. There is a large indoor shopping center, two theatres, cinema and a lively nightscene. Nearby Newcastle International airport is within easy reach and has regular flights to the major hubs of Heathrow/Gatwick and Amsterdam. London is approximately 3.5 hours by train.

    Academic notes: Highly flexible modular structure gives students a wide range of classes to choose from in the two-semester year. The program is modeled on American lines.

    Language notes: Multilateral applicants who are not native English speakers must submit a minimum official TOEFL of 550 (213 CBT) or an IELTS score of 6.

    Room and board: The university provides a choice of high-quality, purpose-built residence halls alongside refurbished older properties. Most rooms are single study-bedrooms. There are some rooms suitable for families and students with special needs. The cost of living in Sunderland is generally lower that in other parts of the UK. A fully staffed Student Services department provides advice on: Health, Childcare, International issues, Careers, Finance, Special Needs and Counseling. There is a wide choice of student societies, and sports facilities include a 25-metre pool, two gymnasia, weights and fitness rooms, and floodlit outdoor facilities. 

    Exchange dates: Academic year: mid-September to June; Semester 1: mid-September to late January; Semester 2: late January to mid-June.

    Special conditions: ISEP multilateral placements are only possible for students from non-European universities.

    Course Information

    Profile: The University of Strathclyde is a British university with a long tradition of excellence. Founded in 1796 as Anderson's Institution, it was established as a university by Royal Charter from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 1964. The university's reputation for high academic and research standards has led to extensive collaboration with industry and with educational institutions throughout the world. Strathclyde is Scotland's third largest university with 13,000 students.

    Locale: The university is situated in Glasgow, the largest city in Scotland and third largest in the United Kingdom. In the early 1990’s, Glasgow celebrated its status as a European City of Culture and in 1999, its dazzling architecture won it the accolade of UK City of Architecture and Design. Since then, the city has continued to build a reputation as a destination where a great experience is guaranteed. Glasgow is home to Scottish Opera, Scottish Ballet and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. The Burrell Collection, a wonderful display of art objects from across the world, is a haven for culture lovers. The Gallery of Modern Art, set in the neo-classical elegance of the former Royal Exchange, displays the work of living artists from across the world. Glasgow is approximately 450 miles from London and can easily be reached by air (one hour’s flight) or train (five hours).

    Academic notes: There are five faculties: Arts and Social Sciences, Education, Engineering, Science, and the Strathclyde Business School. The university operates a credit-based modular system which allows students great flexibility of course content.

    Language notes: Multilateral applicants who are not native English speakers must submit a minimum TOEFL of 600 (250 CBT).

    Room and board: Students will be housed in single room self-catering flats (apartments) on the John Anderson Campus. Each flat houses six students who will have access to a communal kitchen and lounge. A meal stipend is provided.

    Exchange dates: Academic year: mid-September to early June; Semester 1: mid-September to December/January; Semester 2: January to early June.
