    Course information (in English and French)

    Profile: Aix-Marseille III is one of four universities comprising the Aix-Marseille Academy. Teaching and research at Aix-Marseille III concentrate on sciences and social sciences. The faculty of law (created in the 16th century) and political science has the largest number of studentsÑapproximately 8,000. The Institute of Political Studies is attached to Aix-Marseille III.

    Locale: The university is divided between two sites, with seven divisions in Marseille and nine divisions in Aix-en-Provence. Aix-en-Provence is famous for its historic and cultural heritage. Marseille is the second largest city in France and a major European center. Students in sciences will be placed and housed at the Marseille campus. The university is located in the region of Provence .

    Divisions:
    Campus of Aix-en-Provence: Social Sciences (law and political science, European studies, economics, business law, penal science and criminology, business administration and management, political studies, urban and regional planning, French language and literature courses for international students).
    Campus of Marseille - St-Jerome: Science and Technology (chemistry, physics, life sciences, earth sciences, engineering sciences).

    Academic notes: Aix-Marseille III emphasizes law, political science, economics, science and technology. A student registered in the faculty of applied economics follows one of several options including: economic sciences, social and economic administration, mathematics applied to the social sciences (economics and management), or accounting and financial sciences including international trade, media and economics training. In the Institute of Political Studies, there is a one-year certificate program in political science designed for international students.

    Other departments considered appropriate for ISEP students include management, chemistry, engineering, geology, petrochemistry and physical sciences. Aix-Marseille III is not appropriate for students in the humanities, although it is possible to study French language, literature and civilization at the Institute of French Studies for Foreign Students for an extra fee. In 2000-2001, the semester fee for the language center was 3,500 francs.

    Language notes: The university offers pre-exchange intensive French courses through the Institute of French Studies for Foreign Students during June, July and September (not included in ISEP benefits).

    Room and board: ISEP students will live in single-occupancy rooms in residence halls; meals will be taken in one of the several university cafeterias. No married student housing is available.

    Profile: The AREPIC Consortium (Association pour le Développement Des Relations Extérieures Des Etablissements d'Enseignement Supérieur de la Région Picardie) is comprised of three institutions, two of which are ISEP members:

    Université Jules Verne
    Groupe Sup de Co Amiens Picardie (Sup de Co)

    UPIC was founded in 1969 and now enrolls approximately 16,000 students, including 2,000 international students. Sup de Co is a business school which was founded in 1942 and now enrolls about 500 students. Its mission is to train high-level generalists in business and administration.

    Locale: Both institutions are located in Amiens, the capital of Picardie, which is located about 80 miles north of Paris (70 minutes by train). The city offers many cultural attractions including theaters, film and jazz festivals, museums and libraries. Its proximity to the Channel coast also provides recreational opportunities.

    Room and board: Students will be housed in residence halls and will receive a monthly stipend for meals.

    Language notes: Pre-session intensive language courses are offered from the 15th to the 30th of September (not included in ISEP benefits). French language course offered during academic year (partly included in ISEP benefits).

    Divisions: Faculties of Economics and Management; Foreign Culture and Language/Communications Research (civilization, English, German, Spanish, Italian, Russian); History and Geography; Law; Letters; Mathematics and Computer Science; Natural and Applied Sciences (physics, chemistry, biology, physiology); Philosophy and Social Sciences (philosophy, psychology, sociology, education science); Institute of Art (fine arts).

    Language notes: Students may take French language courses for up to 15 hours per week, free of charge during the first and/or second semester. These courses last 12 weeks each semester. Students usually supplement language study with university courses.

    Groupe Sup de Co Amiens Picardie (Sup de Co)

    Divisions: Sup de Co offers classes in Accounting, Advertising, Banking and Finance, Business and Commerce, Business Management and Administration, Economics and Management Science, Human Resource Management, Marketing and Purchasing, and Foreign Languages (English, German, Spanish, Italian). 

    Academic notes: Business areas of finance, management, accounting and marketing are most appropriate. Sup de Co's curriculum includes practical training options which may be available to ISEP participants studying at the advanced level. In the third year program, international management courses are offered in English.

    Course information

    Profile: The Université d'Angers was created in 1971 following the expansion of university centers throughout France. Total enrollment: 16,000. 

    Locale: The university has a large modern campus southwest of Paris, between Nantes and Tours. Angers is one of the largest cities in the Loire Valley, about 90 minutes by rapid train from Paris. 

    Divisions: Economics and Social Sciences (economics, economic and social administration, law, legal studies); Law; Letters and Humanities (applied foreign languages, classical and modern letters, French as a foreign language, geography, tourism, history, linguistics, psychology, English, German, Italian, Spanish); Pharmacy; Sciences (agricultural biophysiology, applied mathematics and social sciences, biology, biochemistry, botany, chemistry, genetics, geology, mathematics, physics, quality control management, natural and life sciences, structural and materials sciences); Science and Technology (applied chemistry and physics, biomedical engineering, computer science, electronics, environmental sciences, electrochemistry, industrial design, materials science, optics, statistics); Technical Institute (applied biology, business administration, electrical engineering). 

    Academic notes: Sciences, business and languages are strong. Also recommended are foreign languages and translation studies (English, French, German, Italian, Spanish and Russian), math and social sciences, physiobiology and vegetable production, business administration and quality control, rural law, technology and scientific innovation, and tourism. 

    Language notes: ISEP participants are not required to take a French language placement exam, but they will be interviewed in French. From early October until May, French language, literature and culture courses for foreign students are given at no extra cost. The language courses equal a half-time academic load (6.5 hours). These courses may be taken for a semester or for the full year.

    Room and board: Students will be housed in single-occupancy rooms in residence halls on campus or downtown. Meals will be provided through a combination of weekday cafeteria service and other arrangements. Married student housing is possible if the ISEP coordinator has sufficient advance notice.

    Profile: Founded in 1432, the University enrolls 27,000 students including about 2,000 foreign students from 50 countries. 

    Locale: A growing city with a population of 200,000, Caen is famed for its two Roman abbeys and its 11th-century castle which houses a museum. Normandy s beaches and monuments make it an enjoyable area to visit. Paris is about two hours away by train. 

    Divisions: Business (business and public administration); Earth Sciences and Regional Planning (environmental technology and forest management, geography, geology, oceanography); Economic Sciences; French Studies; Food Science and Nutrition; History (history, medieval archaeology); Humanities (ancient studies, classics, education, educational psychology, French literature, Greek, Latin, linguistics, modern letters, Norman studies, philosophy, social work, sociology, theater and cinema studies); Languages (English, German, Italian, Russian, Scandinavian, Spanish);

This program is available on a full-year or semester basis. All students studying at Caen are eligible to apply for paid English teaching positions at local French schools. Students should specify on their application that they wish to be placed in the CEUIE courses.

    Language notes: For students following all subjects except French Studies, ISEP benefits do include a three week, pre-semester, intensive language program at the French Studies Center for Foreign Students, which is offered in September, and three hours of French per week each semester.

    Room and board: ISEP students will live in residence halls on campus, in single-occupancy rooms and receive a stipend for meals. No married student housing is available.

    Besançon (pop. 120,000)

    Course information

    Profile: The university was first established at Dôle in 1423 and moved to Besançon in 1691. Most of the university buildings are in the center of town. Franche-Comté enrolls about 2,100 international students from Africa, Europe, the United States and the Middle East. English language theater (BELT) and a local American Football team playing in the national league are added attractions. Total enrollment: 20,000. 

    Locale: Besançon's history dates back to Roman times. The Roman road still leads to the city, which is built on the Doubs River in the Jura mountain range, not far from Switzerland. The city is a center for clock and watchmaking. Besançon has a variety of cultural resources, including museums, theaters and concerts. 

    Divisions: Law, Economics, and Political Science; Letters and Humanities (anthropology, archaeology, art history, classical philosophy, geography, history, literature, musicology, Portuguese, psychology, Russian, sociology, Spanish); Mechanical Engineering and Microtechniques; Physical Education.

    Academic notes: Franche-Comté encourages placement in the sciences. Other strong areas are history and culture (Arabic, French, German, Modern Greek, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Russian), theatre studies, art history and archaeology, FLE (French as a Foreign Language) and musicology.

    Language notes: Full-year students may take intensive French language and culture courses first semester and university courses second semester. There is no extra charge for this program. Pre-exchange intensive language courses are available beginning in late August (not included in ISEP benefits).

    Room and board : Students will be housed, along with French students, in university apartments located about 20 minutes by bus from the university. A stipend will be provided for meals. Married student housing can be arranged.

    Exchange dates: Late September or early October to June, late September or early October to late January, February to June. 

    Special conditions: The Center for Applied Linguistics and the Institute of Technology are closed to ISEP.

    Course information

    Profile: The University of Grenoble II which offers social science courses is situated within a self-contained campus with residence halls, bank, cafeterias, libraries and sports facilities. Total enrollment: 18,500 students. 

    Locale: The city of Grenoble, site of the 1968 Winter Olympics, is situated between the Isère and Drac rivers in the Dauphine region, not far from Italy and Switzerland and near many ski resorts. Besides winter sports, Grenoble offers many social and cultural activities. 

    Divisions: Business Administration; Commercial Studies; Economic Sciences; Economic and Social Administration; History and Art History; Housing and Urban Development; Law; Philosophy and Sociology; Psychology and Education; Social Geography; Technology. Institutes for Economic Research and Planning; Political Studies; Social Sciences; Applied Math and Research Centers.

    Academic notes: Students must have a strong command of French to study in Grenoble. Recommended for ISEP students are administrative studies, art history, economics, international relations, management, marketing, modern and contemporary history, political science and studies in European community integration. Internships, including a short lecture/internship course in gerontology, are open to a limited number of qualified ISEP students.

    The Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Grenoble, which makes available a limited number of places for ISEP students, is affiliated with Grenoble II. L'Ecole Supérieure Des Affaires offers graduate-level international business and marketing courses. Early applications by business majors are encouraged.

    Language notes: An oral French language test may be given upon arrival. A two-hour/week French language course is offered to ISEP students. Additional French language study is not included in ISEP benefits.

    Room and board: Students will be housed in residence halls on or near campus and take meals at the restaurants-universitaires. Married student housing is available at additional cost.

    Course information

    Profile: Established in 1984, Le Havre takes pride in its close relationship to local industries which facilitates hands-on training of students. The libraries house 39,000 volumes. Total enrollment: 6,590. 

    Locale: Le Havre, in the northwest, is France's second largest port. The town was largely rebuilt after World War II and today features beaches and a marina. Le Havre's central location offers frequent ferry service to Great Britain and Ireland, and facilitates travel all over Europe. 

    Divisions: Faculties of International Trade (business administration, economics, history and geography, international banking, international trade, international transportation and logistics, law and languages [Arabic, Chinese, Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Malaysian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish], negotiation, management of sales and purchasing, marketing of industrial products, trade with Asia); Science (advanced maintenance techniques, biology, civil engineering, electrical engineering, information systems/computing, mathematics, mechanical engineering production technology and chemistry [aroma and flavor chemistry], physics); Institute of Technology (business, civil engineering, communications, computer science, electrical engineering, information technology, transport and logistics and mechanical engineering). 

    Academic notes: Economics, international trade, languages, law and mathematics are the most appropriate fields for ISEP participants. Cooperative education programs in business, computer science, engineering, trade with Asia, international trade, management, management of sales and purchasing, negotiation, and transport and logistics are open to ISEP participants. The university will help qualified students find summer internships (not included in ISEP benefits). American students should have French proficiency in order to be able to attend lectures.

    Language notes: A two-hour/week French language course is offered to ISEP students. Additional French language study is not included in ISEP benefits.

    Room and board: Students will be housed in rooms in residence halls. A stipend will be provided for meals which students can use to purchase meal tickets in the cafeteria. Students who qualify for semester exchanges beginning in January will be housed off-campus.

    Villeneuve d'Ascq, Lille (pop. 1 million)

    Profile: The Université de Lille III is an offshoot of the former Faculty of Humanities in Douai, which was founded in 1562 and moved to the capital of French Flanders in 1887. The university takes part in regional culture through its theater and film presentations. It is also linked academically with universities in Belgium, Germany, Ireland, Czechoslovakia, Romania, China, Israel, Poland, and Great Britain. The university sports center is open to ISEP students, as are visiting exhibitions organized by the Center for Cultural Activities. The library houses 400,000 volumes; there are also departmental and research libraries. Total enrollment: 23,000. 

    Locale: Located near the Belgian border and the port of Calais, Lille was originally part of Flanders and still retains a Flemish atmosphere. Lille is a large commercial center with textiles and brewing as the principal industries. Lille III has a publishing and research center at Lille and a campus at Villeneuve d'Ascq, Pont de Bois, where the university is in the center of Lille-Est, about a mile from the Lille city center. 

    Divisions: Applied Foreign Languages (Chinese, Dutch, English, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian, Spanish, Swedish); Classics; Communication Studies; Economics and Social Sciences; Education; English Language and Literature; Fine Arts (film, music, plastic arts, history of art); French Linguistics and Literary Criticism; History; Germanic Studies; Library Science; Information Systems; Mathematics; Philosophy; Psychology; Romance Languages and Literature; Semitic Studies; Slavonic Studies; Social Work; Tourism Studies; Teaching French as a Foreign Language; Theatre Studies; Transport and Logistics; Summer institute in French Language.

    Academic notes: Lille III, a center for teaching, research and continuing education, is the only university in the north of France that offers all traditional arts and letters disciplines. It also offers more contemporary areas of study and vocational courses. 

    Language notes: The University's department for foreign students offers one two-hour/week French language course during the academic year. The course is entitled "French for Academic Purposes".

    Room and board: Students will be housed in single-occupancy rooms in university residences. A stipend will be provided for meals which are available at the cafeterias on campus or in town. Fixed-rate meal tickets are valid in all university-run cafeterias.

    Institut National Des Sciences Appliquées de Lyon

    Villeurbanne, Lyon (pop. 1.2 million)

    Course information

    Profile: INSA was founded in 1957 to train highly qualified engineers, support continuing education and conduct research and testing. INSA is very interested in international exchange; about 600 foreign students from 35 countries study at the institute annually. Total enrollment: 4,500, including 1,000 at the doctoral level. 

    Locale: Lyon is a major industrial center in the southeast of France only 2 hours by train from Paris. The Saone and the Rhone rivers both run through the city. 

    An industrial center, Lyon has factories and modern glass-and-steel buildings, but it also has cafe districts and sections of Renaissance and Moyen Age architecture. Lyon emerged as a Renaissance silk-trading center; fine weaving is still maintained, and several museums are devoted to textile arts. The city's fine arts museum has collections of Spanish, Dutch, Impressionist and early 20th-century paintings. 

    Divisions: Biochemistry; Civil Engineering and City Planning; Computer Science; Computer Engineering; Electrical Engineering; Energy Engineering; Mechanical Engineering; Materials Physics and Engineering; Production Engineering; Telecommunications.

    Academic notes: INSA focuses on engineering and technology with a research emphasis for students as well as faculty; it maintains 34 research labs. Some of the degree programs are computer science (systems analysis and software engineering); biochemistry; energy engineering (thermal systems, chemical engineering, environmental industrial problems); electrical, mechanical and civil engineering; city planning; materials physics; and telecommunications. Only students with GPA's of 3.2 or above, as well as a strong science background and good French skills are eligible for INSA.

    Language notes: An intensive French language program is offered in August/September and January for full-year or second-semester students. This program is included in ISEP benefits. A one-hour/week French culture course is offered to ISEP students during the academic year.

    Room and board: Students will be housed in double-occupancy rooms in a university residence hall. Meals will be provided at the INSA-run cafeteria. No married student housing is available.

    Le Mans (pop. 150,000)

    Course information

    Profile: Founded in 1969, the university houses the European Documentation Center and has computer labs for student use. Total enrollment: 8,500. 

    Locale: Situated on the Sarthe river, Le Mans is about 55 min. by train (TGV) southwest of Paris. The city is of great interest from a historical and geographical point of view. The Gallo-Roman walls still stand 1700 years later as a testament to the excellence of Roman engineering. These walls encompass the Vieux Mans along with several houses celebrating the architectural diversity of different historical periods: the Middle-Ages, the Renaissance and the 18th century. Le Mans Cathedral displays a beautiful combination of Roman and Gothic art due to its different periods of construction from the 11th to the 15th century. Numerous cultural activities and events take place year round (theater, dance, and music--including a renowned Jazz festival in May.) Le Mans is also famous for the race "Les 24h du Mans" in June of every year. 

    Divisions: Letters and Humanities (modern literature, classical literature, history, geography, German, English, Spanish civilization, Applied Foreign Languages [English/German, English/Spanish]); Law, Economics and Economic and Social Administration; Sports Sciences (STAPS--Sciences et Techniques Des Activités Physiques et Sportives) ; Sciences (mathematics, physics, computer science, chemistry, biology, geology, acoustics, materials science, mechanical technology); ENSIM (Computer science, engineering); Institute of Technology (biology, business administration, technical marketing, chemistry, mechanical engineering). 

    Language notes: Four hours of French language instruction are offered throughout the school year and included in ISEP benefits. ISEP students may also take a one-hour/week translation course designed specifically for English speakers. Other classes offered are not tailored for foreign students and include courses on French syntax and linguistics. A good command of French is required for these courses.

    Room and board: ISEP students will live in residence halls and be provided a stipend to cover the cost of meals at the university cafeteria. No married student housing is available.

    Profile: Université Paul Valéry (UPV) is one of the oldest in Europe, founded in 1289. UPV became independent in 1970. Situated on a campus outside the city, the university, one of several in Montpellier, continues to emphasize the arts and humanities and is well known as a center for research in interdisciplinary topics such as strategic studies and experimental psychology. The university has active international links with anglophone Africa, North America and the Mediterranean. The library has over 320,000 volumes including the original 19th-century collections of the Faculty of Letters. Total enrollment: 18,000 (one-sixth international). 

    Locale: Located in the south of France near the Mediterranean coast, Montpellier is an ancient university town which bustles with commercial and tourist activity. Its history is reflected in an 18th-century promenade and 17th- and 18th-century buildings.

Known as one of the best French-language training centers in the nation, UPV has a unique program in teaching French as a Foreign Language with research in socio-linguistics and teaching methodology. Other strengths include mathematics, classic and modern literature, geography, history and archaeology, philosophy and psychology. UPV is a center for regional planning and urban/rural studies and the home of the Languedoc-Roussillon Atlas. 

    Language notes: Very good proficiency in French is required. All ISEP students are required to take a two-hour/week course in grammar and phonetics-this course is included in ISEP benefits. An exam will be administered in early October; students who need or wish to take intensive language courses may take these during the academic year (these language courses are not included in ISEP benefits).     Profile: Although the university was founded in 1962, it is historically linked to the medieval universities of Nantes and Angers. International students comprise nearly 10 percent of the student body. The university takes pride in its role in regional development and the social and cultural life of Brittany. Total enrollment: 30,000. 

    Locale: The city of Nantes is located on the Loire River in the northwest province of Brittany. Today, Breton culture is manifested in the distinct regional character of the people and the Breton language is still spoken in some rural parts of Brittany. 

    Nantes is a major port and industrial center; it is also a lively cosmopolitan city with cafes and gardens. The city is rich in architecture; sites include the Gothic Cathédrale St. Pierre, a 15th-century chateau and classical 18th-century buildings and palaces. Nantes also has many museums and is host to numerous cultural events. Frequent train connections run to Paris, Tours and Lyon.

    Course information

    Profile: Université de Nice, a comprehensive university, was founded in 1965; it traces its origins to the distinguished 17th-century college of law that became the modern university's law faculty. The Faculty of Letters and Humanities, which serves 8,000 students at its Carlone complex, overlooks the Mediterranean from a hill above the city center. The campuses are modern, although the Chateau de Valrose in its luxurious park adds a touch of traditional elegance to the sciences campus. 

    Administrative and academic facilities include a computer center, general and subject-area libraries, language labs and audiovisual classrooms and athletic facilities for swimming, tennis, gymnastics and skiing. The Schuman Campus and the School of Business Administration (IAE) are located downtown. Frequent bus service connects the campus. Total enrollment: 20,000 

    Locale: Nestled alongside the Baie Des Anges on the Mediterranean, Nice is dominated by its mountaintop observatory which overlooks all six campuses of the university. Flanked by beaches and close to Alpine skiing areas, the city has fine museums, year-round arts festivals, opera, theaters. Nice is 1/2 hour by train from Cannes and Monaco.

    Locale : Rennes, the capital of Brittany, is a lively city with 300,000 inhabitants (including the main suburbs). The architecture shows various aspects in connection with the history of the city: medieval, 18th century, and modern style. Rennes also has a thriving automobile industry and is a center for computing and telecommunications research and development. It is also a cultural capital and the city has an opera, concert halls and theaters. In addition, it hosts an annual film festival and internationally known rock festival.  The student population of the city is around 60,000. 

    Its central position in Brittany allows easy access to the beaches and places of interest on the north coast (Le Mont Saint Michel and Saint Malo are less than an hour's drive away) as well as the Atlantic coast.  Brittany is also only a two hours' ride from Paris on the TVG, a high-speed train. 

    Note : Cross-registration is possible with all three members of the consortium.

      Profile: Created in 1991, the Rennes Institut d'Etudes Politques (IEP) belongs to the Sciences Po group of nine higher education establishments in France. Even though the Rennes IEP is officially attached to the Université de Rennes 1, it is administratively and pedagogically independent. Fine professors as well as guest lecturers, top civil servants, and heads of industry teach the carefully selected group of 440 IEP students. The IEP takes a pluridiscipliary approach to the academic program to provide a solid grounding in general culture allowing students to choose from a wide range of professions upon graduation. Study abroad and internships are also intergral elements of the program.

      Profile: The University of Rennes began in the medieval period with the creation of the Breton University. The actual statutes comes from the 1968 reform when the former university split into two new universities: Rennes 1 and Rennes 2. The University of Rennes 1 welcomes 24,400 students (including 1,650 from abroad) who are taught by 1,200 full time and 1,100 part-time professors. It is a multidisciplinary institution consisting of three large scientific fields: Science and Technology (13,000 students), Health Science (5,000 students), Social Science ( 9,000 students). In Rennes, the University is split into three major campuses with all facilities and it also has several departments outside of Rennes, in Britanny. Co-sponsored by ISEP-France and its member institutions, this second semester program (February through June) is open to students who have had the equivalent of 400 hours of French studies. There are no classes for beginners. Students are expected, when they arrive, to have mastered the basic communication skills necessary for most everyday life situations. A language test is organized to place the students at the level which is appropriate for them. A full courseload is approximately 15 to 20 hours per week.  Standard ISEP benefits are included.

    Profile: A multidisciplinary university, Saint-Etienne was founded in 1970. It has a "stéphanoise" orientation to the region's social and economic needs.     Locale: Saint-Etienne is a city of the Rhône-Alpes region of southeast France, located on the Loire River. It is known as a "white, blue and green" area because of its skiing, boating, mountaineering and other outdoor pursuits. The university's law, economics, letters and humanities buildings are near downtown Saint-Etienne; sciences and technical institute buildings are at a separate site.

    Course information

    Profile: A medium-sized University (12,000 students) with 3 campuses. Good facilities (library, computing, sports, accommodation, catering, etc.), with special attention paid to assistance for induction, French language, "brush-up" sessions, help with administrative procedures, organized visits of the region, etc. 

    Locale and Divisions: The campus for Arts, Humanities, Social Science, Law, Economics, Languages and Applied Management (International Business, Transport, Tourism, Hospitality) is beautifully landscaped and just a few minutes' walk from the city centre of Chambéry. Applied and basic science, and technology, environmental and some engineering studies are 10 kms away on Le Bourget campus, linked to the Science Park which borders France's biggest natural lake (biology, chemistry, construction and environmental engineering, geology, mathematics, materials science, physics, etc.) In the historic and lakeside town of Annecy, 50 kms from Chambéry, the third campus houses General Management studies and further engineering and technology departments (business, administration, electronic engineering and robotics, mechanical engineering, etc.). 

    The two Savoyard departments, dominated by the French Alps, are bordered on the north by Switzerland and on the east by Italy. Savoie is about 400 kms from Paris. Tourists enjoy the area for its Alpine and cross-country skiing and water sports. Chambéry was the capital of the former Duchy of Savoie. Like Annecy 50 kms away, it has preserved the charm of an old city.

    Profile: The Université des Antilles et de la Guyane (UAG) is the only French university in the Caribbean . Between 1970 and 2000, 5 campuses were established on each of the three French Overseas Departments in the region: French Guiana , Guadeloupe and Martinique .

    Today, UAG has a total of 12,000 students enrolled at two campuses in French Guiana , two in Guadeloupe , and one in Martinique . The campuses are locally ruled by administrative bodies called pôles. UAG enrolls about 500 international students from Africa , the Caribbean , Canada , Europe , and the United States .

    Locales: French Guiana is the only French Territory located on the South American mainland. Situated on the northern coast, its main city is Cayenne with a population of 41,000. The two UAG campuses are in Cayenne and Kourou.

    The archipelago of Guadeloupe includes the islands of St Barthélémy, St. Martin , les Saintes, la Désirade, Marie-Galante, and Guadeloupe itself. The main city of Basse-Terre , with a population of 12,410, is located on Guadeloupe . The two AUG campuses are located in Pointe-à-Pitre ( Grande-Terre ) and St. Claude ( Basse-Terre ).

    Martinique is the second largest island of the French West Indies . It is home to the active volcano Mount Pelée , which erupted in 1902. The main city, with a population of 100,000, is Fort-de-France . The campus is in the town of Schoelcher .

    International Relations

    Divisions: Faculties of Arts; Law, Economics and Political Science; Sciences; Institutes of Administration ; and Linguistics and Anthropology.

    Academic notes: Unique offerings include Creole studies, ethnology and anthropology in a multiracial society, tropical environment studies, literature and anthropology of the Indian Ocean , and African literature and culture.

    Language notes: The university offers a twelve-credit French as a foreign language course and a one-credit translation course throughout the school year. A two-credit class in Creole language and culture is also offered. Language courses are not designed to be a student's full course load.

    Exchange dates: Academic year: early September to late June; Semester 1: early September to mid-December; Semester 2: early February to late June.

    Room and board: Participants are housed in student residence halls and given a meal stipend.

    Profile: Founded in 1970, La Réunion achieved university status in 1982. New facilities, including an international residence hall, cafeteria and library have recently been built. There are exceptional outdoor sports facilities. Total enrollment: 10,000.

    Locale: The university is located within walking distance of the commercial center and about three miles from the old town center in St. Denis.
