Profile: : Founded in 1954, the Jesuit-administered Universidad Católica del Uruguay was recognized as a university in 1985 and continues its tradition of providing personalized education. Drawn from both national as well as international universities, the faculty offers solid undergraduate and graduate coursework, integrating theory and practical experience. International professors frequently visit the university to give lectures and seminars. The university offers a special program for international students, which emphasizes the different aspects of the Spanish language. Student facilities include a library, counseling center and student advisory services, a recently renovated radio studio, a photo lab, computer labs and membership in the Iberoamericana Educational Television Network. Students also have access to a wide variety of extra-curricular activities. Total enrollment: 2,500 students.
Locale: The university is located in Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay. A port town on the Río Plata, Montevideo is the capital of the MERCOSUR and is mainly populated by European immigrants. The city offers a mild climate, clean air and wonderful beaches. The university is about a 15-minute ride from the downtown area.
Divisions: Business School (business administration, international commerce, labor relations); Communications; Computer Science; Education (pre-school, education sciences); Psychology; Sociology.
Academic notes: The faculty of Communication Sciences and the Department of Sociology are favored by international students because of the specific courses they offer. Other strong fields for ISEP students include the Business School and psychology. The special program for foreign students offers three courses per semester: Uruguayan and Latin American History, Latin American Literature (selected authors), and Spanish language. Graduate-level programs in business, mercosur law and psychology are open to students with advanced Spanish language proficiency and who meet the entrance requirements.
Language notes: An intensive Spanish-language course is offered during the academic year (65 hours of instruction per semester). Pre-session intensive courses are offered in February and July (not included in ISEP benefits) if the minimum enrollment requirements are met.
Room and board: There is no on-campus housing. Housing and meals will be provided by host families. In the unlikely occasion a family is not available, students will be housed in a student hostel. The ISEP coordinator will advise students on their housing accommodations prior to arrival.
Exchange dates: Academic year: early March to December; Semester 1: early March to July; Semester 2: early August to December. Observes Southern Hemisphere calendar .
