The University of Valladolid is one of the oldest in Spain, and although, the exact date of its foundation is unknown, the first reference to it is in a document of King Sancho IV of Castilla in 1293. In the 16th century, Valladolid was declared one of the three principal universities of the Kingdom of Spain. Through the years, Valladolid has added among others, faculties or college of Sciences, Economics, Law, Arts and Medicine. Students registered for courses at the University number in the 40,000s.
The beautiful, medium-sized, progressive city of Valladolid, where the University is located is the capital of the region of Castilla and Leon. Valladolid has a population of approximately 450,000 and its weather is very comfortable, but the winters are colder than San Diego's and the summers are hotter. Valladolid is one the most important cities of Spain combining the splendor of its past with contemporary advances and development. The city houses famous "Castillos" and museums such as the National Museum of Sculpture and Casa de Colón, where he died.

The University is believed to have its origins in the 13th Century (1293), under the regime of King Sancho IV de Castilla. Originally founded as a General Studies Institution, the University became the focus of the Spanish Renaissance in the 16th Century. After a period of decline in the 18th Century, the University was transferred to Madrid in the 19th Century. However, in the academic year 1975-1976 the University re-opened its doors in Alcalá de Henares.

The University district and some of the university's centers such as the University's Hospital Ramon y Cajal and the Center of Iberoamerican Industrial Relations are in Madrid.
The City of Alcalá de Henares is about 20 miles from Madrid and it has a population of 166,925. It is part of the comunidad Autónoma de Madrid. Alcalá de Henares, a city of great historic tradition was initially called Complutum by the Romans. In December 3, 1998, UNESCO declared the city and its University as "Patrimonio de la Humanidad" (Monumental City of the Patrimony of Humanity). Madrid, Spain (pop. 4 million)
Language of instruction: Spanish

Locale: Madrid became Spain’s capital simply through its geographical position at the centre of Iberia . When Felipe II moved the seat of government here in 1561 his aim was to create a symbol of the unification and centralization of the country, and a capital from which he could receive the fastest post and communications from each corner of the nation. The site itself had few natural advantages – it is 300km from the sea on a 650-metre-high plateau, freezing in winter, burning in summer – and it was only the determination of successive rulers to promote a strong central capital that ensured Madrid’s survival and development. Nonetheless, it was a success, and today Madrid is a vast, predominantly modern city, with a population of some three million and growing. The journey in – through a stream of concrete-block suburbs – isn't pretty, but the streets at the heart of the city are a pleasant surprise, with pockets of medieval buildings and narrow, atmospheric alleys, dotted with the oddest of shops and bars, and interspersed with eighteenth-century Bourbon squares. By comparison with the historic cities of Spain – Toledo, Salamanca, Sevilla, Granada – there may be few sights of great architectural interest, but the monarchs did acquire outstanding picture collections, which formed the basis of the Prado museum. This has long ensured Madrid a place on the European art tour, and the more so since the 1990s arrival – literally down the street – of the Reina Sofía and Thyssen-Bornemisza galleries, state-of-the-art homes to fabulous arrays of modern Spanish painting (including Picasso's Guernica ) and European and American masters.
Profile: The Autonomous University of Madrid was created in 1968. It was conformed by five faculties: Sciences, Law, Philosophy, Arts & Letters, Medicine, Political Science, Economics and Commercial (Economic Section); localized in different areas of Madrid . On October 25, 1971, with the inauguration of Cantoblanco's campus, the university started to grow in its infrastructure. The university raised the number of staff; the Psychology faculty is created; and also raised the number of research projects and help services for those activities.
The Autonomous University of Madrid is a public institution in the Spanish and international context. It is recognized by its highest quality researcher units, its enterprising capacity, its permanent search of the educational excellence, as its noticeable social commitment. Its international projection is seen promoted by numerous programs of exchange with universities of the entire world, in which students, professors and not educational personnel participate. The Autonomous University of Madrid offers undergraduate and graduate studies. The innovative teaching, research and quality defines it personality. Its management, transparent and efficient, is oriented to service the users. The proposal of physical ordering of the campus carried out by the architect Carlos Ferrán, in 1983, was the base of its subsequent urban development that materializes in the following years with the construction of numerous buildings and infrastructures that conforms its current image.
The campus of Cantoblanco has 22.252.000 square meters total surface. Of the 766.630 m2 built-up, 120.000 are zones landscaped, which gives the feeling of a privilege mountain area. In the campus of Cantoblanco are found the building of the governed and central services, and the faculties of Sciences, Philosophy and Letters, Law, Economics and Business, Psychology, Education and the School Upper technical college. The campus of the Faculty of Medicine is situated next to the hospital The Peace.
The university is gifted of spaces and infrastructures adapted for the work and living of the university community, with a great respect by the environment. It possesses an excellent communication with Madrid and neighboring towns, such as Alcobendas , San Sebastián of the Kings, Three Songs and Old Apiary. The presence of schools (preschool, school), offers an extensive cultural and sports that promote complementary leisure activities, and the basic services (bookstore, pharmacy, optical, banking branch offices, travel agencies) facilitate the life in the campus and they permit to be approached each time more to their initial conception of university campus.
These conditions create the environment required for the learning, the professional training, the communication and, above all, the life forms experience, the acquisition of know-how and of convictions, key for an integral formation in a company of just, supportive, and free beings.
Divisions: The University has seven main faculties: Sciences, Law, Philosophy and Letters, Law, Economics and Business (Marketing, Economics, Business and Tourism), Psychology, Education and the School Upper technical college.

Its proximity to the Plaza of Castile and to the Station of Chamartín, makes the place suitable of residence for all students that choose the Autonomous University of Madrid to initiate their university studies. The temporary stays of visiting professors of the U.A.M. from different countries, also enrich the day by day of our School.
