Program Description and Course Offerings
In Spain, the International Programs is affiliated with the Universidad de Granada and the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. Two years of college-level Spanish are required to participate. Both institutions have a division for foreign students with course offerings focusing on the language, literature, history, geography, economics, politics and culture of Spain. For the student with near-native fluency in spoken and written Spanish, the possibilities are much more extensive. Further, all students are required to take at least one course from the regular offerings of the university where they are placed.
In Granada, International Programs students are enrolled in a special division of the University for foreign students: the Centro de Lenguas Modernas (the Centro). Courses are at the undergraduate level, and are limited to a program oriented toward the study of Spanish language, civilization and culture. Additionally, students are required to take a course offered in one of the departments of the Facultad de Filosof'a y Letras.
In Madrid, the International Programs is affiliated with other American universities through an organization called the Universidades Reunidas Norteamericanas (the Reunidas). The University of Madrid offers a special program for this organization and uses regular faculty members of the Facultades de Filolog'a, de Filosof'a and de Geograf'a e Historia. The University of Madrid offers one special course for each ten students enrolled in the overseas programs of the member universities of the Reunidas. All of those courses are at the upper-division level and are taught in Spanish. In addition, all students are required to take one course in the departments of the above-mentioned Facultades.
