Profile: The University of Malta has undergone a rapid expansion in the past few years. From a total enrollment of 800 in 1988, the number of students has increased to 7,500 in 1999. The university hosts around 450 overseas students, the largest group being from the United States, and the university plans to increase that number. The present campus, opened in 1968, has recently been greatly extended to include theater-type lecture rooms and science, language and computer laboratories. The library has been expanded to accommodate its 500,000 volumes. The sports complex includes a new Olympic-sized swimming pool and separate diving pool, a football ground, tennis courts and a track. Total enrollment: 7,500.

Locale: The University is located in Msida (pronounced im-seeda), on Malta, which is one of a group of islands and rocky islets that comprise the Republic of Malta. The island, with a population of 375,000 and measuring about 17 by 10 miles, is in the center of the Mediterranean about 60 miles south of Sicily. The Maltese have one of the highest standards of living in the Mediterranean and an impressive record in health and education. Msida is a suburb of Valletta, the republic's capital city. Valletta is easily reached from the university by bus, affording convenient access to the capital's museums, palaces, hospital, theater, libraries, botanical gardens and churches.

Divisions: Architecture, Arts (American studies, Anglo-Italian studies, Arabic, archaeology, art, classical culture and civilization, communication studies, comparative religion, contemporary Mediterranean studies, Near Eastern studies, economics, English, French, Greek, Hispanic studies, history, international relations [European studies], Italian, Latin, linguistics, Maltese, mathematics, music studies, philosophy, psychology, social studies, theater studies); Computer Science, Economics, Management and Accountancy (accountancy, banking and finance, economics and public administration, management, public policy and labor studies); Education; Engineering (civil, mechanical and electrical engineering); Health Care; Social Work; Law; Science (biology, chemistry, computer and math studies, physics); Theology.

Students must meet the minimum ISEP GPA requirement to be considered for placement in ! Malta . Please note that a student's GPA may affect their confirmation.

Academic notes: The University of Malta is a good site for liberal arts students who are flexible in their course selection. Strong fields of study include Mediterranean studies and civilization, and Near Eastern studies.

The University of Malta is currently reorganizing its academic calendar and some coursework in some departments is offered on a full-year basis only. As a result, students studying at Malta for one semester should be aware that course availability may be limited; flexibility in course selection is required.

Room and board: Students will be housed in a new university residence hall. A stipend will be given to cover meals. Married student housing can be arranged.

Exchange dates: Academic year: late September to June; Semester 1: late September to early February; Semester 2: late January/ early February to June. Academic year and second semester students cannot depart before the end of exams, which may go into the third week of June
