    YONSEI UNIVERSITY

    Program Description and Course Offerings

    • Broad variety of courses in English and most active international program in Korea.
    • All courses on semester-credit system to facilitate credit transfer.
    • Easy public transportation to downtown Seoul.

    Profile: The University is a 110-year-old private institution associated with the Presbyterian and Methodist churches. Two-thirds of Yonsei's faculty holds doctorates from U.S. institutions. The student body is taken from the top 2 percent of high school graduates in Korea. The foreign student population is about 800, with most students from the United States. Total enrollment: about 30,000.

    Locale: Yonsei University has a 250-acre campus in the wooded hills of western Seoul, 20 minutes from downtown by bus or subway.

    Divisions: In English- International Division Undergraduate and graduate courses in Korean/East Asian business, culture, economics, history, international relations, politics, sociology, Korean language and literature, philosophy. In Korean- Colleges of Business and Economics, Education, Engineering, Home Economics, Law, Liberal Arts, Music, Nursing, Science, Social Science, Theology.

    Academic notes: Yonsei's International Division offers an undergraduate Korean and East Asian Studies Program, taught in English, with intensive Korean-language instruction. The M.A. Program in International Studies is also open to graduate ISEP candidates for one semester, one year or the full two-year degree. All departments of the university are open to those who are proficient in Korean.

    Language notes: All undergraduate and graduate courses in the International Division are offered in English. Participants proficient in Korean may enroll in regular university courses.

    Room and board: Students will be housed in double-occupancy rooms at the International House with a stipend for meals.

    Exchange dates: Late August to June, late August to December or late February to June.

    AJOU UNIVERSITY

    Profile : Founded in 1973, Ajou University (AU) is a private co-educational institution of higher learning, rated within the top ten universities among two hundred educational institutions in Korea. AU was founded on the commitment to provide instruction and research in engineering. With its development, the University has steadily expanded its scope, currently offering bachelor, master and doctoral degrees in 34 majors from seven colleges: the College of Engineering, the College of Medicine, the College of Information and Communication, the College of Humanities, the College of Business Administration, the College of Natural Sciences, and the College of Social Sciences.

    An outstanding characteristic of Ajou University is its specialization in international studies, engineering, medicine, business administration, information and communication, which have a strong academic foothold in the nation as well as abroad. The University also takes pride in its pioneering role in educational reforms, which have kindled new enthusiasm for university reforms in Korea. In addition, Ajou University is distinguished for having a generous financial supporter, Daewoo Educational Foundation in Korea. Current enrollment: 10,600 students, of which 1,600 are graduate students.

    Locale: Ajou University is located in the central area of Suwon, the principal city of Kyunggi-do Province, approximately 20 miles from Seoul. Ajou University and the surrounding communities offer a rich educational and recreational environment with the unique cultural and historic heritages of Suwon and easy access to the diversity of Seoul, the world's tenth largest city. The university provides a cozy academic and residential atmosphere with harmoniously arranged classrooms, laboratories, libraries, residence halls, and recreational and cultural facilities on the main campus of 500,000 square meters (125 acres).

    Academic notes: During the academic year, all divisions of the university offer courses in English. International and area studies (East Asia), engineering, and business administration are highly recommended for ISEP participants. However, ISEP students are welcome to apply to all other academic areas.

    Language notes: Korean language instruction is provided as an ISEP benefit during the regular semester.

    Room and board: Students will be housed in double-occupancy rooms in a university dormitory on campus. The university dining service provides students with meal plans at a very low cost. For those not selecting a meal plan, several cafeterias and kitchen facilities are available on campus. Kitchens are located on each floor of the dormitory.

    Profile: Founded in 1886, Ewha Womans University was the first Christian educational institute for women in Korea. The University has played a major role in the advancement of women in Korean society. Ewha is committed to specializing and carrying out world-class research in Korean culture, languages, life sciences, information and communication, design, international relations, area studies and women's studies. Ewha offers 68 majors in 14 colleges. In addition to the graduate school, there are 3 professional graduate programs and 9 special graduate programs, which offer masters programs in 50 fields, and doctoral programs in 45. Total enrollment: over 20,000 students as of Fall 2001 (15,000 undergraduates).

    Locale: Ewha Womans University is located in the Shinchon area of Seoul, about 15 minutes by subway from downtown Seoul, the capital and heart of the Republic of Korea, home to about 11 million of the nation's 46.8 million people. Seoul is the financial, political, commercial, recreational, educational and cultural center of Korea, home to major corporations, banks, government offices, leading schools and universities, theaters and restaurants. From the moment of arrival on campus, one discovers what it means to enjoy the beautiful Ewha campus, and the vibrant larger community of both Shinchon and Seoul.

    Academic notes: Some of Ewha's strongest fields include, international studies, women's studies, Korean studies, North Korean studies, and Asian studies. Many of these courses are offered in English.

    Language notes: ISEP participants can take any of the English and Korean taught courses offered by Ewha depending on their language proficiency. Korean language programs are available throughout the academic term on tuition pay.

    Room and board: Students will be housed in single- or double-occupancy rooms on campus depending on room availability. Students receive either a 19 meals per week plan at the cafeteria or a stipend to purchase meals.

    Exchange dates: Academic year: early September to mid-June; Semester 1: early September to mid-December; Semester 2: early March to mid-June.

    KEIMYUNG UNIVERSITY

    • An exclusive host-university of the CCIS (the College Consortium for International Studies) Korean program.
    • KAFSA (Korean Association of Foreign Student Administrator) Presidential University, 1999-2000.
    • Faculty of International Studies and Commerce and Faculty of Fashion Design have recently received a special, designated fund from the government to be used for cultivating international experts.

    Profile : The University (originally Keimyung Christian College) was founded in 1954 by the American missionary Edward Adams of the Northern Presbyterian Mission in conjunction with local church leaders of the Taegu area. Through subsequent growth and diversification, the college became Keimyung University in 1978. In 1981 the university merged with the Dongsan Presbyterian Hospital of Taegu, augmenting the university's medical school. Since 1980, KU has been moving to the new 450-acre Sungsuh Campus in the western district of Taegu.

    Keimyung University (KU) is a private, coeducational four-year university offering bachelor', master's, and doctoral degrees. Under the educational precept "for the kingdom of truth, justice, and love" and educational motto "the pursuit of academic excellence and the promotion of academic ethics," KU has dedicated itself to educate, research and serve to enhance human well-being for more than 40 years.

    KU consists of 22 faculties, 3 departments with 80 majors, and the total enrollment of full-time students is almost 29,000 (27,000 undergraduate students and 2,300 graduate students) with 620 faculty members. Eighty percent of the professors hold a Ph.D. or the highest degree in their fields. KU also has 11 graduate schools, 12 affiliated research institutes, and 17 supporting facilities.

    Locale: KU consists of three campuses: about 450 acres at Sungsuh campus, about 30 acres at Daemyung-dong downtown campus, and about 12 acres at Dongsan campus (downtown) in which the Dongsan Hospital, the Medical College and the College of Nursing are located. Most of its academic programs, residence halls, and major library are located at the new Sungsuh Campus on 450 acres of the western Taegu.

Most majors offer at least one or two major courses taught in English. In Korean- Language & Literature; Humanities; International Studies; Commerce; Business Administration; Social Sciences; Politics & Economics; Police Sciences; Law; Basic Sciences; Applied Sciences; Environmental Studies; Engineering (construction systems, automotive, computer & electronic, chemical & material); Nursing; Life Sciences; Music; Fine Arts; Fashion; Physical Education.

    Academic notes: During the past two years, elective courses using English as the language of instruction have included: Korean language, Korean history and culture, Korean literature and drama, Korean management and economy, international management, international trade, accounting, Korean politics, politics in East Asia, architecture, computer science, music, arts, Korean dance, Tae-Kwon-Do, and business administration. Please contact the ISEP coordinator for further information on courses offered in English.

    Language notes: Korean language is offered as a course throughout the academic year.

    Room and board: Students will be housed in residence halls. Two meals are provided per day, with a stipend provided for lunch.

    KOREA UNIVERSITY

    • Internationally respected Asiatic Research Center and Korean Cultural Research Center.
    • Library of 1.65 million volumes includes rare books and books in archaic Chinese.

    Profile: Korea University and Yonsei University are the two oldest private universities in the country. The competition between the two institutions is much like the rivalry between Oxford and Cambridge. Founded in 1905, KU prides itself on being the first Korean higher education institution founded and run by Koreans, as opposed to the Western and Japanese influences at other schools.

    Today it is famous for two distinguished scholarly institutes: the Asiatic Research Center and the Korean Cultural Research Center, with internationally respected publications, conferences and research projects. Some 80 percent of the faculty earned their advanced degrees abroad. Campus facilities include nearly 60 buildings housing classrooms, laboratories, computer center, museum, audiovisual center, sports and residence halls, among others. The Korea University library collection contains 1.65 million volumes, including rare books, microfilms, United Nations publications and old books in archaic Chinese. Total enrollment: 32,000 (24,500 undergraduates).

    Locale: The University is located in the hilly Anam-dong section of Seoul, two miles northeast of the famous East Gate monument. A branch campus, Seochang, is in Jochiwon, 60 miles south of Seoul, and university-owned experimental research farms and forests exist in the city outskirts. The main campus is 20 minutes from downtown Seoul.

In Korean- Colleges of Business Administration, Economics and Commerce; Education; Engineering; Humanities; Law; Liberal Arts; Medicine; Political Science and Economics; Natural Resources; Science; Science and Technology; Life Sciences; graduate schools.

    Academic notes: ISEP students are encouraged to apply for the International Education Program offered during the academic year and the six-week, summer program in Korean and Asian Studies, with a Korean language option. The interdisciplinary International Education Program offers more than two dozen courses each semester in English, ranging from economics and international business to international relations. For the summer program, course topics include Korean history, economy and business practices, politics and society, literature, faces of Korea.

    ISEP students can also take courses offered by the Graduate School of International Studies. The GSIS offers some 20 courses each semester, which are designed to meet specific student needs, for example international politics, business, and economics.

    Language notes: The International Education Program, the summer program, and all courses offered by the GSIS are taught in English. All other programs require fluent Korean. Pre-session Korean language instruction is available (not included in ISEP benefits). Korean language instruction is also available during the academic year, in which case ISEP benefits apply.

    Room and board: Students will be housed in university residence halls. Two meals are provided per day, with a stipend provided for lunch.

    Exchange dates: Academic year: early September to late June; Semester 1: early September to late December; Semester 2: early March to late June.
