    Profile: Founded in 1361, the University of Pavia is one of the oldest institutions of learning in Europe and one of Italy's most prestigious. Romanesque towers rise above the university's neoclassical piazza, Leonardo da Vinci, where students attend classes. Total enrollment: 28,000.

    • Renowned center for research in the faculties of sciences.

    Locale: Located on the banks of the Ticino River, Pavia is a peaceful university town featuring extensive Romanesque and Renaissance architecture. The city's comfortable size and medieval character are a pleasant contrast to the bustle of Milan, located just 30 minutes away.

    At the University of Pavia, we believe in the top quality of the service we provide, with regard to education, research, services and the quality of life the students enjoy in their host city. We also value the completion of studies, a facilitated entry into the world of work and the quality of leisure with recreational, sport and cultural activities available. The Noble prizewinner for Physics, Carlo Rubbia, chose Pavia as the center for his teaching and as a base for important research projects.

    Academic notes: Pavia is a comprehensive university offering many programs in the arts, sciences, social sciences, business and engineering. Semester exchanges are possible in biology, chemistry, economics, engineering, geology, medicine, natural sciences and political science.

    Room and board: Students will be housed in single- or double- occupancy rooms of university residential colleges; many are historical structures. Meals are provided in student cafeterias.

    Profile: Founded as a private university in 1506, Urbino has a distinguished academic reputation which draws visiting lecturers from throughout Italy. Its students comprise a majority of Urbino's population. Facilities are a blend of restored historic buildings and modern lecture halls and offices, including a student center beyond the city walls. Law, letters, science and education are the major emphases at Urbino, which also features the Istituto Statale d'Arte, specializing in engraving, lithography, animation and ceramics. Total enrollment: 22,000.

    • Located in one of the most important centers of the Renaissance in Italy.
    • One of the oldest universities in the country.
    • Residence halls are considered one of the most outstanding examples of modern university architecture in Italy.

    Locale: Once an important political center and the home of many prominent figures in the Italian Renaissance, the historic walled city of Urbino sits in the mountains near the tiny Republic of San Marino. The birthplace of Raphael, its centerpiece is the 15th-century palace built by the Duke of Montefeltro. Located 30 miles west of the Adriatic beach towns, Urbino has in many ways retained its medieval character, with narrow, crooked streets lined by shops and overhanging apartments. The city is surrounded by picturesque vineyards, forests and mountain streams.

    Academic notes: Urbino provides an ideal setting for students of classics, Italian language, linguistics, literature, and art and archeology, particularly Etruscan, Greek, Roman and medieval periods. History and philosophy are also recommended.

    Room and board: Students will be housed in single-occupancy rooms with bath, and receive a meal plan at student cafeterias.

    Profile: The Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, founded in 1921 by Father Agostino Gemelli, is one of the most comprehensive and complete higher education institutions in Italy. Its network of Cultural Development Centers extends as far as the Italian islands, making the university strongly national, with the added bonus of being recognized in the international scientific community. Thanks to its prestigious faculty, the Università Cattolica excels in the diverse study opportunities that it offers, both in the humanities, as well as the scientific fields. Through the courses offered, combined with strong research programs, the university values and promotes an interdisciplinary approach that helps students gain scientific knowledge in a responsible and autonomous fashion.
    The campus offers a complete range of services, all of which share a common goal: meeting the needs of a large student population. The campus may best be described as "a city within a city," where finding your way and learning the ropes is easy thanks to effective tutoring services and competent academic advisors and coordinators. Total enrollment: 30,000.

Milan has always been forward-looking. During its 2,000 year history, it has been a driving force for great social, economic, cultural and political events. Milan is also a city of art, with a wealth of monuments, palaces, churches and museums, not to mention, the Duomo and La Scala, the temple of Opera.

    Divisions: Banking, Finance, and Insurance Sciences; Business (accounting, economics, management, marketing); Education (adult education, pedagogy & planning for education, science of learning processes, sport & exercise sciences, sports science for prevention and rehabilitation); Foreign Languages and Literature (English, French, German, Russian, Spanish); Humanities (archaeology, architecture, art history, classics, communications, drama/theatre, history, library science, literature, philosophy, theology/religious studies); Law (business law, legal atudies); Political Science (international relations, publics relations & communication); Psychology; Sociology (social studies, social work).

    Academic notes: Fields that are especially appropriate for ISEP participants include Humanities, Business/Economics, Languages & Literature, Political Science and Sociology.

    Room and board: ISEP students will live in single- or double-occupancy rooms in residence halls and will receive a meal stipend to cover meals at the cafeteria or to prepare meals. Married student and family housing are not available

    Locale: Trieste, for centuries the "gateway to the sea" of the Austrian Empire, lies at the northernmost tip of the Adriatic Sea. The capital of Italy's Friuli-Venezia-Giulia region, Trieste is nestled between a beautiful gulf, which annually hosts the largest sailing regatta in Europe, and the highlands of Karst. Almost everything in Trieste is within walking distance and the city has reliable public transportation including a turn-of-the-century streetcar for the hills. Due to its past as a seaport and emporium, Trieste has a rich history of cultural and religious diversity. Austria, Slovenia and Croatia are within easy reach.

    Divisions: Architecture; Chemistry; Economics (accounting, business, finance, information systems, international business, management, marketing, tourism & recreation); Education; Engineering (chemical, civil, computer, electrical, electronic, industrial & mechanical); Humanities (anthropology, archaeology, classical languages, communications, film, history, journalism, languages [Bulgarian, Dutch, French, English, German, Modern Greek, Portuguese, Russian, Serbo-Croatian, Slovene, Spanish], literature, philosophy); Law; Medicine; Natural Sciences (astronomy, biology, earth sciences, environmental science, geography, marine biology); Mathematics and Physics; Pharmacy; Political Science; Psychology; Translation and Interpreting.

    Language Notes: A minimum of four semesters of university-level Italian is recommended in order for participants to take regular university courses. Students may take some courses taught in English, but knowledge of the Italian language is necessary. The university offers Italian language courses throughout the year that can be taken in addition to regular university courses. An intensive pre-session course is also available before the start of the first and second semesters. Students may also access online Italian lessons offered through the Language Center.

    Academic notes: Fields that are especially appropriate for ISEP participants include Humanities, Business/Economics, Languages & Literature, Political Science and Sociology.

    Program Dates: Academic year: September to June; Semester 1: September to February; Semester 2: February to June.

    Room and board: Participants receive a stipend to cover the cost of a rented room in a shared apartment and meals.
