National College of Art and Design
Profile: As a recognized College of the National University of Ireland founded in 1746, it has over 250 years of experience training artists, designers, and art educators. It offers the largest range of art and design degrees in the State at undergraduate and postgraduate level. The College has over 750 full-time students and a further 800 students who are taking non-award evening classes. The College's campus is situated on Thomas Street, in the historic Liberties area of Dublin.
Limited space is available, but NCAD does facilitate a select number of visiting students from art and design colleges abroad who wish to follow a non-award, self directed program of study under tutorial guidance. Such applicants should follow the normal application procedure and are welcome to contact the Admissions Office for advice.
Locale: Dublin lies on the east coast of Ireland. The city is split - physically and psychologically - by the river Liffey; the north has traditionally been poorer and the south wealthier. Popular sights in town include Dublin Castle, the Guinness Storehouse, and the amazing Phoenix Park with many travel opportunities throughout Ireland and the UK.
Divisions: The Collage has four faculties: Design, Education, Fine Art and History of Art and Design and Complementary Studies. With the exception of the Industrial Design course and the Faculty of Education course, First Year (Core) provides the first year of all undergraduate courses.
Academic notes: Coursework places a major emphasis on the traditional skills and techniques associated with each discipline while also focusing on the development of the individual within the broad area of art and design studies. Topics include: Craft design, History of Art, Fashion Design, Textile Design, Industrial Design, Visual Communications, Ceramics, Metals, Glass, Jewelry, Art and Design Education, Painting, Drawing, Sculpture, Printmaking, Photography, Video, and Postgraduate Studies.
Room and board: NCAD has no student residences and does not have an accommodation service. Students must find their own accommodation. Students from outside the Dublin area are advised to arrive at least a week in advance of the beginning of term to allow them time to find accommodation. The NCAD Students' Union may be able to assist students in obtaining accommodation and provides a list of hostels.
Exchange dates: Term I - Late September to Mid December, Term II - Early January to Mid March, Term III - late April to Late May, Final examinations and exhibitions - Early to Mid June.
