Course information
Profile : PUC-Rio, created in 1941, now has 23 departments and offers 31 courses of study for undergraduates and 40 programs for graduates. The student body is primarily Brazilian. Total enrollment: 12,000. Considerable number of Extension courses is also offered, with around 5,000 students enrolled per year.
The campus is in a quiet neighborhood near the city's cultural and commercial centers. Campus facilities include cafeterias and restaurants, a bookstore, three banks, a post office, a first aid center and an adjacent bus terminal. PUC-Rio is also well equipped for sports, open to ISEP students at no extra fee, including gymnastics, soccer, handball, volleyball, basketball, judo and karate. Capoeira classes can be taken for an additional cost. Swimming is possible at the Flamengo Sport Club, near the campus.
Academic facilities include language labs, research labs in chemistry, computer science, engineering and physics; and educational labs in industrial design, journalism, psychology and publicity. All students have free access to the microcomputers center and to the Internet. The main library division serves the whole university community, and there is also one specialized library per academic center.
Locale : Rio de Janeiro was Brazil's capital until Brasilia was built in 1960. Due to its intense and diversified cultural life, it is still considered the country's heart. Its setting between mountains and ocean has an unforgettable effect on visitors. Rio is famous for its beaches, soccer teams and most of all, Carnival. Rio's natural beauty and cheerful people make it a pleasant city in which to live.
Divisions : Centers for Social Sciences (business administration, economy, geography & environment, history, law, social communication [journalism & advertising], social work, social sciences & international relations); Theology and Human Sciences (arts [industrial design], education, letters [conference interpretation, linguistics, literature, modern languages, Portuguese, translation], philosophy, psychology, theology); Science and Technology (chemistry, computer science & engineering [automation & control, civil, electrical & electronic, industrial & production, materials & metallurgy, mechanical], mathematics, physics); Interdisciplinary (architecture/ urbanism, environmental engineering). Graduate-level study only - biomedical sciences.
Academic notes: Strong academic fields include business administration, computer science, economics, engineering, letters, mathematics, philosophy, physics and theology. Curricula in communications, history, geography and environment, psychology and sociology are also strong. PUC-Rio also has independent research institutes and/or projects which students may want to participate in: the Telecommunications Center (CETUC), the Institute of International Relations (IRI), the Institute of Business and Administration (IAG), and the Instituto Gênesis.
Registration in courses in the areas of law, business administration, economics and engineering may be subject to the availability of places. In the area of social work many welfare projects are developed with homeless people, street children, drug addicts, etc.
Language notes: Intermediate level Portuguese proficiency is recommended. Portuguese for foreigners is taught at five levels of proficiency as regular courses. All foreign students must take a placement test before classes begin and register in the indicated Portuguese level. Students placed in Portuguese level I will not be allowed to attend other courses. Students placed in Portuguese level II will be allowed to attend a restricted number of indicated courses. Students placed in Portuguese level III will be allowed to attend most courses except for a few senior ones. Students placed in Portuguese level IV and V are free to choose any other courses. A pre-term intensive Portuguese course is offered at an additional cost for those who do not have intermediate fluency or for those who have not studied Portuguese before, but are fluent in Spanish. Room and board: Students will be housed in a single-occupancy room in a family house. PUC-Rio will provide a monthly stipend to cover the cost of meals and rent during the term; half of the stipend will be paid in the months of July and December. No married student housing is available.

Academic notes: FAAP offers small classes and individualized programs. ISEP students are welcome to attend and combine courses in all fields of study provided they have the appropriate level of Portuguese and preparation for the classes they choose.
Language notes: The language of instruction is Portuguese. We recommend students to have at least an intermediate level of Portuguese to attend classes. For those who do not have Portuguese knowledge, FAAP offers Portuguese as a Second Language Course through the Extensive Portuguese Course (17 weeks). This program includes classes in beginning or intermediate Portuguese, as well as Brazilian history, culture, and music.

Room and board: Residence hall room will be available for ISEP exchange students. Limited opportunities with host families may exist. Students will receive tickets equivalent to 19 meals per week, to purchase at restaurants and supermarkets. FAAP also has a cafeteria on campus.
Profile : FAAP was a small foundation destined to help and develop Fine Arts in 1947. Today it is considered one of the most important and respected academic institutions in Brazil and houses the following schools: Arts, Business, Communications, Law, Economics, Engineering and Computer Science; besides FAAP - Graduate School, the Executive MBA (considered one of the best courses in Brazil) and a High School.
With over 13,000 students and 750 current professors, FAAP is also present in the cultural area through the MAB - Museum of Brazilian Art and the FAAP theatre.
But it is in the formation of students that Fundação Armando Alvares Penteado stands out in the academic scenario. Entertainment and Art have the face of São Paulo ; there is a feeling of culture everywhere. The city has 223 cinemas, 92 theatres, 11 cultural centers, 70 museums, and a dozen of historical buildings. The five amusements parks and the great number of leisure places are the icons of the city. São Paulo has 7 large soccer stadiums and the automobile racecourse of Interlagos, seat of the World Championship of Formula I, the only one in the entire Latin America . |
