Director's Letter
Dear Parents,
As a parent of two college graduates I know how challenging it can be to help our children make the best choices, and when it comes to helping them select the right institution for their higher education, the challenge can be overwhelming because there are so many factors to consider. To help you help your student make the best decision, I offer three reasons why San Diego State University (SDSU) may be the right educational investment for you and your family.
First, each member of our International Student Center (ISC) staff is personally committed to student success. Our staff offers a rich diversity of backgrounds, skills and perspectives: collectively, we originate from 20 countries, speak 25 languages, and have lived, studied or worked in more than 60 countries. When we say, "We know where you're coming from" , we really mean it. Every student who comes through our doors becomes part of our extended ISC family, and we make every effort to help them feel welcome, to learn about their needs and interests, and to provide them with services and programs that will facilitate their successful transition into SDSU and the local community.
Second, SDSU is a Doctoral/Research University focused on global learning and excellent academics. Located on the world's busiest border crossing and facing the Pacific Rim , international education is a major cornerstone of our mission and preparing global-ready graduates has become one of our primary goals. Many of our academic departments are highly ranked nationally and several have won prestigious awards for excellence or innovation. SDSU has created one of the largest and most successful international student communities in the world: 1,400+ students coming from 85+ countries and 1,300+ students going to 50+ countries. Supporting student mobility across borders is something SDSU does very well. Since 1960, over 12,000 students from 150+ countries have selected SDSU as their institution of choice and today they are the 'minds that move the world", both literally and figuratively.
Third, San Diego has always been a welcoming and fun-filled city for visitors from all over the world. But what has made San Diego even more attractive as an educational destination for international students is the growing wealth of employment opportunities available in emerging industries associated with telecommunications, bio-technology, international business, information technologies, GIS and environmental sciences, to name just a few. We work closely with many local companies to help our international students find internships and practical training opportunities that will better prepare them for tomorrow's global workforce.
There are many good reasons why SDSU might be the right choice for your daughter or son and we encourage you to find out as much as you can about our programs and services.
