Commitment
to Safety and Security
A Resident's Commitment to Safety and Security
I am responsible to assist the staff in making my residence
hall safe.
I will continually be security conscious and play a part in
keeping our communities safe.
I understand that security of our residence halls is only as
strong as my commitment to keep my community safe and secure.
I will emphasize personal safety at all times.
I will lock my room, always carry my keys, and never prop open
or tamper with an exit door.
I will report suspicious persons to the staff and University
Police.
I will not allow someone to follow me through an entrance door
without using their key or card.
I will respect and cooperate with staff in their efforts to
enforce safety and security policies.
I will respect and follow all hall and university policies.
I will become familiar with, and participate in, campus safety
and security programs, such as the Rape
Aggression Defense course.
I will not tamper with safety equipment such as smoke alarms,
fire extinguishers, and pull stations.
I will take personal responsibility for the safety and security
of myself, as well as the residents and staff in my community.
I will keep a personal emergency kit, including water, in my
room.
Guests
Living areas of the residence halls are locked 24 hours a day.
Guests must call from the call boxes at the entrance of each
building.
The resident must come to the desk, sign the guest in, (guest’s
photo ID required) and escort the guest everywhere they go.
Residents are responsible for guests at all times. Lending
or duplicating building entry cards or keys is prohibited.
Written roommate permission is required for overnight guests.
Safety Staff
Security monitors serve as the “eyes and ears” of
the hall. Their primary responsibility is to ensure the safety
of residents. They assist in making halls secure by controlling
resident and non-resident entry.
University Police are sworn law enforcement who respond to
emergencies and unlawful behavior. They are present during
periodic safety checks and assist in various educational programs
in the halls. They are available 24 hours a day.
