Your Residence Hall Living Environment
Q. Are all the halls coed or are some single-gender only?
A. All of the halls are coed, although most are gender-separated by wing. All rooms, suites and apartments are single-gender only.
Q. Can I have a bedroom to myself?
A. There are a limited number of single rooms available and are offered on a first-come, first-serve, space available basis. Most students should expect to be assigned to a double room. If you are in a double room and your roommate leaves, chances are that space will be filled with another resident.
Q. How many people share a bathroom facility?
A. Anywhere from 20-40 people will share a bathroom facility. Most bathrooms have 5 showers, 4-5 stalls and 5-10 sinks. Because of students' varying class schedules, there does not tend to be much overlap. Villa Alvarado Apartments each have one bathroom facility and each suite in Cuicacalli Suites has two bathrooms.
Q. What amenities do the rooms have?
A. Each room is equipped with an extra-long twin bed, desk and chair, dresser, closet and bookshelf for each resident. Each room also includes a microfridge (except Cuicacalli Suites). Additionally, rooms are equipped with a telephone line, a separate Ethernet line and local cable. Voicemail, local telephone and cable service is provided at no additional cost.
Q. What is the room size? What is the closet space? How
much room is there under my bed? With extensions, how much room is under
my bed?
A. Double rooms are approximately 11' x 14'; Zura Hall single rooms are approximately 8.5' x 11'; Villa Alvarado Apartment bedrooms are approximately 11' x 15'; single rooms in Cuicacalli are approximately 711" x 137"; and double rooms in Cuicacalli are approximately 16.5 x 15".
Closets measure approximately 6.5' high x 3.5' wide and 2.5' deep.
There is approximately 12" of space underneath each extra long twin bed. With height extensions, there is approximately 1'6" of space underneath each extra long twin bed. Beds in Cuicacalli Suites have approximately 43.5" of space underneath with a three-drawer dresser on one side (beds are adjustable in height).
Q. May I bring electronic equipment?
A. Yes. Telephones, computers, TVs, VCRs and stereos with headphones are permitted. Cable-ready televisions are recommended to take advantage of the free local cable service provided.
Q. Do I need to bring a computer?
A. All rooms are equipped with a separate Ethernet line. Many students choose to bring a computer, but you do not have to. The Living/Learning Center includes computer labs for exclusive use by residents of the LLC community. In addition, there are computers and other computer labs available around campus for students' use.
Q. Is there additional storage available in the hall?
A. Most of the rooms include some storage space above the closets. Many students bring storage containers to keep underneath their beds. There is no additional storage available in the halls.
Q. Can I bring my own furniture from home?
A. Rooms are fully furnished and the furniture included in the rooms may not be removed or stored. Some students choose to bunk their beds and bring a small lounge chair (such as a bean bag chair) to add to their room. Keep in mind that space in your room is limited.
Q. Can I decorate my room?
A. Residents are encouraged to decorate their rooms, however posters and decorations may only be attached to surfaces with materials that will not cause any permanent damage. Painting is not allowed. Charges are assessed for damages resulting from improper attachment of artwork/decorations in your room. Other restrictions apply on room decorations and posting, and are included in your Student Housing License Agreement, Part 1 as part of your housing contract. Be sure to read your License Agreement book thoroughly.
Q. Would I be charged if I bolted down my computer to the desk in my room?
A. If you're concerned about the security of your desktop or laptop computer, you should consider buying a security kit, available at most computer stores. Your computer may have special locking features built in--check your owner's manual and buy a kit suited to it. We suggest you get one with at least a 6-foot security cable. There are no secure lockdown points on the room desks, so we suggest you attach the cable to the bed posts.
Q. Do you allow pets?
A. The only pets allowed in the residence hall rooms, hall common areas, or on the premises, are fish in an aquarium up to 25-gallon capacity. No other pets are allowed.
Q. Is there a curfew?
A. No. There is no curfew in the residence halls. Residents are required to show housing identification each time they enter their hall, however, and are expected to adhere to all hall rules, including quiet study time. Successfully living in a community environment requires being aware and considerate of other members of the community.
Q. Can I have overnight guests in my room?
A. The overnight guest privilege is extended to you on a temporary and occasional basis only after securing written approval from your roommate and registering your guest at the hall front desk. There is a strict limit on the number of nights and visits per calendar month. All visitors and guests must be escorted by the resident at all times. This information is included in your Student Housing License Agreement, Part 1, and is part of the contract you sign.
