Preparing for Move-out

When moving out of the halls at the end of the academic year, residents have the option of completing an Express Check-out or Standard Check-out. Any residents leaving at the end of fall semester must complete a Standard Check-out.

Express Check-out

As part of the check-out process, please complete the Check-out Survey. This is an anonymous survey. The purpose of this study is to help the Residential Education Office improve our programs and support services for future residents. Completing this survey is voluntary. Please note that if you choose not to participate in this survey it will in no way negatively affect your check-out process.

The check-out survey takes about 15-25 minutes to complete, and you are requested to do it in one sitting. To access the survey, click here. This link will be available from now through late May.

1. If you are the first person to check out of the room, a standard (inspected) check-out appointment with your resident advisor is recommended.

2. The desk staff will give you a key envelope for your keys and/or access card.

3. Move all your belongings, clean and lock your room, place all of your keys and/or access cards in the Express Check-out envelope and drop the keys in the drop box at the desk. Once your key envelope is returned to the drop box, the Express Check-out is complete!

IMPORTANT REMINDER: All first-class mail will be forwarded to the mailing address listed in your SDSU WebPortal (magazines will not be forwarded) As part of your move-out process, please be sure this is updated with your summer address. Don’t forget to cancel newspaper/magazine subscriptions and update your address with any other mail you may receive at your residence hall address.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is Express Check-out?
Express Check-out is an alternative residence hall check-out process for students who wish to leave the hall without a formal “walk through” appointment (see Standard Check-out for a full description). Express Check-out is best used for students who do not have damages to their room and have cleaned their room thoroughly. In exchange for the ability to checkout without a formal process, the ability to contest/appeal cleaning or damage charges is waived.

Express Check-out isn’t for everyone. If you are the first person to check out of the room, a standard check-out appointment is recommended.

2. How do I use Express Check-out?
You can start your Express Check-out by taking your Check-out Survey Certificate to the front desk where you will receive your Express Check-out key envelope. Once you have removed your belongings from the room and are ready to leave the hall, place your key(s) and access card (when applicable) in the key envelope and deposit it in the Express Check-out box located at the front desk. When you have deposited your keys and access cards, your Express Check-out is complete. Failure to follow this express process will result in a $15.00 fee for improper check-out.

3. Can I appeal charges if I use the Express Check-out?
No, if you choose the Express Check-out process, you waive your opportunity to appeal or contest damage or cleaning charges assessed to your room. If you believe you will be charged damage or cleaning charges, a standard check-out appointment with your resident advisor is recommended.

4. What are the common charges assessed for cleaning and damages?
A list of common charges is available for download (pdf format, Adobe Acrobat required).

5. What happens if damages happen to my room after I leave?
You will be billed for any damages or cleaning charges assessed at the time of the staff check-out inspection. If you believe charges will be assessed to your room, a standard check-out appointment is recommended.

If you are the first person to check out of the room, a standard check-out appointment is recommended. If your roommate creates damage or cleaning charges after your departure, the charges will be assessed to the room and split by the roommates.
