Questions About Your Living Environment

Below is a list of the most common questions about the hall living environment.

Where do I eat?
The primary dining facility for residence hall students is The Dining Room at Cuicacalli Suites, located on the east side of campus. Dinner is served buffet style, all-you-care-to-eat. There are over 16 food service locations on campus that accept meal plans, plus five Aztec Market convenience stores. Specific hours and locations are provided when you check into the residence halls.

Are all the halls coed or are some single-gender only?
All of the halls are coed, although most are gender-separated by wing. All rooms, suites and apartments are single-gender only.

Can I have a bedroom to myself?
There are a limited number of single rooms available. Most students should expect to be assigned to a double room. If you are in a double room and your roommate leaves, you should expect that space to be filled with another resident.

How many people share a bathroom facility?
From 20-40 people will share a bathroom facility in the traditional residence halls. Most bathrooms have 5 showers, 4-5 stalls and 5-10 sinks. Because of students' varying class schedules, use of the facilities is staggered. Villa Alvarado Apartments have one compatimentalized bathroom facility per apartment, Aztec Corner Apartments have one or two bathrooms depending on the floor plan, and each suite in Cuicacalli Suites has two bathrooms. At University Towers four residents share a common bathroom.

What amenities do the rooms have?
Most rooms are equipped with an extra-long twin bed, desk and chair, dresser, closet and bookshelf for each resident (University Towews has regular twins; Aztec Corner has full-sized beds). Each residence hall room also includes a microfridge (except Cuicacalli Suites). Additionally, most rooms are equipped with a telephone line, a separate Ethernet line and local cable. Voicemail, local telephone and cable service is provided in most halls at no additional cost. The virtual tour of each hall details what's included in that particular hall.

What is the room size? What is the closet space? How much room is there under my bed?
Visit the virtual tour section on each building page to view floor plans for each room type. The floor plans include the most common dimensions including closet space and bed size.

May I bring electronic equipment?
Yes. Telephones, computers, TVs, DVDs, VCRs and stereos with headphones are permitted. Cable-ready televisions are recommended to take advantage of the local cable service provided.

Do I need to bring a computer?
Most rooms are equipped with a separate Ethernet line. Aztec Corner has Internet modems. Many students choose to bring a computer, but you do not have to, there are computer labs available on campus for students' use.

Is there additional storage available in the hall?
Most rooms include some storage space above the closets. Many students bring storage containers to keep under their beds. There is no additional storage available in the halls.

Can I bring my own furniture from home?
Rooms are fully furnished and the furniture included in the rooms may not be removed or stored. Some students choose to bunk their beds and bring a small lounge chair (such as a bean bag chair) to add to their room. Keep in mind that space in your room is limited.

Can I decorate my room?
Residents are encouraged to decorate their rooms, however posters and decorations may only be attached to surfaces with materials that will not cause any permanent damage. Painting is not allowed. Charges are assessed for damages resulting from improper attachment of artwork/decorations in your room. Other restrictions apply on room decorations and posting, and are included in your Student Housing License Agreement policies and regulation section and are available online in the Guide to Living in the Halls. Be sure to read your License Agreement thoroughly.

Would I be charged if I bolted down my computer to the desk in my room?
If you are concerned about the security of your desktop or laptop computer, consider buying a security kit, available at most computer stores. Your computer may have special locking features built in--check your owner's manual and buy a kit suited to it. We suggest you get one with at least a 6-foot security cable. There are no secure lockdown points on the room desks, so we suggest you attach the cable to the bed posts.

Do you allow pets?
The only pets allowed in the residence hall rooms, hall common areas, or on the premises, are fish in a bowl up to 2-gallon capacity. No other pets are allowed.

Is there a curfew?
No. There is no curfew in the residence halls. Residents are required to show housing identification each time they enter their hall, however, and are expected to adhere to all hall rules, including quiet study time. Successfully living in a community environment requires being aware and considerate of other members of the community.

Can I have overnight guests in my room?
The overnight guest privilege is extended to you on a temporary and occasional basis only after securing approval from your roommate and registering your guest at the hall front desk. There is a strict limit on the number of nights and visits per calendar month. After that, charges apply. All visitors and guests must be escorted by the resident at all times. This information is included in your Student Housing License Agreement policies and regulation section and is available online in the Guide to Living in the Halls.
