New Residential Options for Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors

Why do some students have a successful experience in college, persisting to graduation, while others, equally talented, do not? Research indicates that a key difference is the residential experience. In fact, it has been proven that students who live on campus for a second, third and even fourth year are more likely to graduate on time than their off-campus counterparts. Beginning in 2010/11, San Diego State University will offer some new success options for students. In addition, rates for on-campus housing will not increase, and in many cases, decrease from current rates. For more information, see here.

University Residential Live-on Requirement

Beginning Fall 2010, all admitted first-time-freshmen from outside the San Diego State University (SDSU) local service area will be required to live on campus. In addition, all first-time freshmen participants in the University Honors Program will be required to live on campus. For more information visit the SDSU On-Campus Housing Live-On Requirements website. The university continues to highly encourage all students to live on campus at least two years while studying at the university.

Students living on-campus continue to academically out-perform their peers living off-campus :

  1. Residential students averaged a 2.81 GPA while off campus students averaged a 2.38. Residential students living in one of the many “learning communities” averaged a 2.89.
  2. 30% of students living off-campus were placed on academic probation compared with 14% of residential students.
  3. Of those off-campus students placed on academic probation, 50% are disqualified as SDSU students by the end of the spring semester; 27% remain on academic probation, and 24% are removed from academic probation.
  4. Residential students living in “learning communities” at SDSU are twice as likely to graduate in four years than their non-learning community residential peers.
  5. Residential students who live on for two (2) years have a continuation rate to junior year of 90%; those who live on for one (1) year have a continuation rate of 70%. Students who live off campus have a continuation rate of 58%.
