About Residential Education

Residential Education Mission Statement

The Residential Education Office strives to provide safe and supportive on-campus living learning communities where diverse students are challenged to develop holistically; as scholars, citizens and leaders. Residential Education staff members are dedicated to providing curricular and co-curricular experiences to develop and enhance residents' academic success, awareness and appreciation of diversity, and civic responsibility.

Values

Residential Education's values are a set of core beliefs that guide our work with students, colleagues, faculty and other constituents. While contributing to the goals of the University and the Division of Student Affairs, staff members of the Residential Education Office strive to:

  • Achieve excellence in all that we do.
  • Address students as unique individuals with multidimensional needs and unlimited potential for personal development.
  • Promote integrity, accountability, responsibility, respect and collaboration.
  • Promote the connectedness between curricular and co-curricular learning.
  • Embrace, celebrate, and educate issues related to diversity.
  • Develop communities that embrace civic responsibility, life-long learning, and healthy lifestyles.
  • Maintain balance and perspective, serving as sound role models for others.
  • Innovate, evaluate, and refine programs to best meet the needs of the changing student population.

Commitment to Diversity

San Diego State is a highly diverse campus. Residence Hall Coordinators provide leadership in building a community that fosters understanding, appreciation and celebration of diversity. Our students and staff represent diverse backgrounds, religious and political beliefs, racial groups, sexual orientations, cultures, and levels of abilities. In our programs, staff training, publications, policies, and everyday interactions, we encourage acceptance and appreciation of people for their unique characteristics that enrich the living environment. Hall Coordinators are involved in organizing diversity programs for the halls by training staff in issues of diversity, assisting student government in organizing diversity programs, and in recruiting a diverse student staff.

From our Staff

“We are very pleased with our decision to become part of the Housing & Residential Life community at SDSU. The RHC position has given us the opportunity to grow and develop our skills in areas such as judicial advising, supervision and administration. It is a pleasure to work in an environment where we are given autonomy, yet guidance, to make a difference in the character, academic and social development of the students we interact with on a daily basis. We are grateful to be employed by a university that is committed to the diversity that is impacting our society today. Come and join our fun and committed staff team; a choice you will never regret.”
