What’s Happening:

Furlough Day correction!

The latest issue of News for Aztec Parents, Fall 2009, listed November 25 as “Furlough Day, Campus Closed.” The campus is open except for those offices affected by state mandated furlough. Classes will be in session. Your student should follow his or her course syllabus and confer with his or her instructors should questions arise. Most Residence Halls will close at 4 pm on Wednesday, November 25, with the exception of those halls that are designated to be open during campus breaks.

If you have further questions, contact the Parents Hotline at 619-594-1653.

University Residential Live-on Requirement

Beginning Fall 2010, all admitted first-time-freshmen from outside the San Diego State University (SDSU) local service area will be required to live on campus. In addition, all first-time freshmen participants in the University Honors Program will be required to live on campus. The university continues to highly encourage all students to live on campus at least two years while studying at the university.

Students living on-campus continue to academically out-perform their peers living off-campus :

  1. Residential students averaged a 2.81 GPA while off campus students averaged a 2.38. Residential students living in one of the many “learning communities” averaged a 2.89.
  2. 30% of students living off-campus were placed on academic probation compared with 14% of residential students.
  3. Of those off-campus students placed on academic probation, 50% are disqualified as SDSU students by the end of the spring semester; 27% remain on academic probation, and 24% are removed from academic probation.
  4. Residential students living in “learning communities” at SDSU are twice as likely to graduate in four years than their non-learning community residential peers.
  5. Residential students who live on for two (2) years have a continuation rate to junior year of 90%; those who live on for one (1) year have a continuation rate of 70%. Students who live off campus have a continuation rate of 58%.
