Assumption Program of Loans for Education (APLE)

For teachers in California

The Assumption Program of Loans for Education (APLE) is a teacher incentive program administered by the California Student Aid Commission (CSAC) that assumes (takes over the payment) student loans in return for students fulfilling certain educational requirements for schools.

The APLE may assume up to $19,000 in outstanding educational loan balances for a qualifying teacher.  It is designed to encourage outstanding students to become teachers and serve in critical teacher shortage areas in California public elementary and secondary schools.

Terms for participants:

In return for loan assumption, participants serve as public school (K-12) teachers in California in specific designated areas—

  • subject matter
  • schools that serve students for low-income families
  • schools exhibit low performance
  • schools that serve rural areas
  • state special schools
  • schools with a high percentage of emergency permit teachers

Federal Cancellation and Deferment Option

If you are teaching or plan to teach full time in an elementary or secondary school serving students from low-income families (as designated by the U.S. Department of Education), it may be possible for you to have a portion of your outstanding loan balance forgiven after teaching full time for a certain number of years.

If you are teaching full time in a federally approved teacher shortage area or teaching in a subject-matter shortage area, you may be able to defer repayment of your student loans and/or have a portion of your outstanding loan balance forgiven.

The cancellation and deferment options differ for Perkins Loans or Stafford and Direct Loans.
