Picture of Sandy Jorgensen-Funk

Sandy Jorgensen-Funk, Ph.D. is the Director of Counseling & Psychological Services and has worked in a number of roles since beginning here in 1987, including Staff Psychologist, Intern Supervisor, Intern Training Coordinator, and Associate Director. She received her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology in 1985 from the California School of Professional Psychology and has been a licensed psychologist since 1987 and a licensed Marriage & Family Therapist since 1986.

In addition to her university counseling center work, her previous experiences have included community-based mental health, alcohol and other drug counseling, and counseling with military members and their families. Clinical interests include student transition and adjustment to college, outreach and consultation, with an emphasis on expanding student access to C&PS services. She is a member of the Association of University & College Counseling Center Directors (AUCCCD), The Organization of Counseling Center Directors in Higher Education (OCCDHE), and the San Diego Psychological Association (SDPA).


Picture of Jennifer Rickard Jennifer Rikard, Ph.D. is the Associate Director of C & PS and co-coordinator of the ASPIRE program. She provides counseling to students for a wide range of presenting problems, teaches Bounce Back classes, and provides training and supervision to interns. She is a developer of the e-CHECKUP TO GO intervention programs, used on over 600 campuses worldwide. A licensed psychologist, she is a graduate of George Washington University and the California School of Professional Psychology – San Diego. She completed a doctoral internship at the University of Miami - School of Medicine.

Dr. Rikard is a member of the Cherokee Nation. She has expertise in Motivational Enhancement Treatment and participated in a training program for Native American providers given by the University of New Mexico. She has many years of experience and training in working with Deaf, hard of hearing and late-deafened individuals and uses American Sign Language.


Picture of Jada Cade Jada Cade, Psy.D. has been a faculty psychologist at C&PS since 2008 and is the coordinator of the Peer Education Program and campus outreach. She is a graduate of William and Mary College, earned a doctorate in Clinical Psychology from George Washington University in 2005, and completed her internship at Gouveneur and Bellevue Hospitals in New York City. She was a post-doctoral fellow in neuropsychology and behavioral medicine at UCSD. She has worked with a variety of patient populations including in hospital settings, emergency rooms and triage, schools and universities and outpatient settings. 

Dr. Cade’s specialties and areas of interest include assessment and evaluation, performance enhancement, eating disorders, trauma, and couples’ work. She has completed several projects with the C&PS website to de-stigmatize mental health issues and to assist students in gaining access to services utilizing the web. Given her experience as a Division I athlete in college, she has particular interest and experience working with athletes and students managing multiple demands. 


Picture of Martin Doucett Martin Doucett, Ph.D. is a licensed psychologist at Counseling & Psychological Services where he provides mental health services to SDSU students and supervises doctoral interns. Dr. Doucett is the liaison to Student Disability Services where he provides consultation and psychological assessments for students with disabilities related to mental health conditions. He recently developed a biofeedback program within the counseling center. He has developed and implemented an Anger Management Program and co-developed a Civility/Citizenship Workshop for students who are mandated to treatment for behavior that violates campus policies.

Dr. Doucett has a strong interest in cross-cultural therapy. He lived in Bahrain in the Middle East and has traveled extensively. He enjoys working with international students from the Middle East and Latin America. Dr. Doucett is also a member of the Safe Zones training team and is a former faculty advisor to SDSU’s Gay and Lesbian Student Union. He is certified in relationship violence treatment and helped to develop and implement a court certified program for relationship violence in San Diego’s Gay and Lesbian Community, as well as research regarding relationship violence among gay and lesbian couples. Additionally, Dr. Doucett conducts workshops and trainings with community groups and county agencies on various aspects of family violence and gay and lesbian culture. He is a member of the San Diego Psychological Association and serves on the LGBT Task Force.


Picture of Ross Flowers Ross Flowers, Ph.D. is a psychologist with expertise in performance and sport psychology. He has made a career counseling and consulting with culturally diverse individuals, teams and organizations in business, sport, military and academia. Dr. Flowers teaches, designs and implements skills development programs for local, national and international performance.

Dr. Flowers has served at the Associate Director level of the United States Olympic Committee as a senior sport psychologist creating sport psychology programs for national governing bodies of sport and implementing services to teams and individuals. He successfully integrated performance services into the culture of an Olympic Training Center through research, written reports, individual and group consultation, leadership training, team building, capital project requests, educational programming, and training venue development. He served on many USA World Cup, World Championship and Olympic teams. Most recently he served as the sport psychologist on the 2011 USA Track and Field World Championship team in Daegu, South Korea, 2010 USA Olympic Team in Vancouver, Canada, and the 2008 USA Olympic team in Beijing, China.

Dr. Flowers previously founded and directed the Applied Sport Psychology Program at the University of California, Davis serving 26 intercollegiate athletic programs, over 800 student-athletes and 121 coaches and staff. He also supervised the professional development of psychology doctoral candidates specializing in applied sport psychology. He holds a doctorate of philosophy in Counseling Psychology from the University of Missouri.-Kansas City with emphasis in performance and sport psychology.


Picture of Joy Hung Joy Tsai-Yuan Hung, MFT is a licensed marriage and family therapist. She has a Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology with an emphasis on integrating Western psychotherapy with Eastern Wisdom Traditions. Joy’s clinical experience has included mental health treatment in community outpatient settings and private practice. Joy has worked with underserved Asian immigrant and refugee populations, with the help of interpreters at times. She has special interests in working with acculturation, adjustments and transitions, identity development, multicultural issues, Asian-American issues, and inter-cultural relationships.

Joy was born and raised in Taiwan. She immigrated to Vancouver, Canada, moved to San Francisco for graduate school and settled in San Diego in 2008. She is multilingual in English, Mandarin, Taiwanese, and limited Cantonese.


Picture of Liz Kingsbury Liz Kingsbury, Psy.D. is a licensed psychologist and has worked at Counseling & Psychological Services for 5 years. She is the co-coordinator of the Bounce Back Retention Program. She provides individual counseling to students and teaches Bounce Back courses. She has expertise in Mindfulness-based approaches to psychotherapy, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing in the college population. Other interests include the development of empathy and self-compassion, positive psychology, community-based mental health, and the use of Biofeedback with college students. She is passionate about working with college students of diverse and international backgrounds.

Dr. Kingsbury has also worked at the counseling center at the University of San Diego and in community mental health centers. She attended Trinity College in Hartford, CT and the California School of Professional Psychology – San Diego.


Picture of Jerry Kropp Jerry Kropp, Psy.D. has been employed at Counseling & Psychological Services since 2009, where he is a supervisor in the ASPIRE program and coordinates the Successful Community Living program. He also provides individual therapy and is involved with many of the other services including COPE and Bounce Back. He obtained his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Arizona and his doctoral degree from Alliant International University.

Throughout his professional career, Dr. Kropp maintained a private practice emphasizing psychological assessments and individual therapy, worked at multiple inpatient psychological facilities, and provided therapy focusing on alcohol and drug use. He also has extensive experience working with court mandated forensic populations, including a dissertation examining the personality profiles of stalkers that was presented at the 2009 San Diego Psychological Association Fall Conference.


Picture of Shira Oetzky Shira Oretzky, Ph.D. is a licensed clinical psychologist and has worked at Counseling & Psychological Services since 2004. She earned her doctorate at the California School of Professional Psychology and her dissertation research focused on the effects of yoga as a treatment for depressive, anxious, and physical symptoms in young adults. She has presented her research at multiple conferences including the American Psychological Association and the Symposium of International Association of Yoga Therapists.

Dr. Oretzky uses an integrative approach to working with students pulling from psychodynamic, interpersonal, mindfulness, family systems, and multicultural theories. She specializes in sports psychology, stress management, depression, attention deficit disorder, and alcohol and drug issues. Additionally she teaches Bounce Back classes at the University. Dr. Oretzky worked as a staff psychologist on Semester at Sea, a floating globe-travelling study abroad program, through the University of Virginia. She has travelled extensively to South America, Africa, and Asia and uses her experiences abroad to bring a multicultural perspective to her work with students.


Picture of Manuel Rivera Manuel Rivera, MFT provides counseling to students for a wide range of presenting issues, teaches Bounce Back classes, and provides training and supervision to interns. A licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, he is a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley and San Diego State University. Manuel was born in Puerto Rico, and is bilingual in Spanish and English. He has been living and working in San Diego since 1996.

His most recent clinical experiences include working with military service members and their families at Fleet and Family Support Counseling Services, and working with adolescents and families involved with San Diego’s Juvenile Court and Community Schools. Manuel is particularly interested in helping individuals, families, and communities as they develop resilience in the face of adversity.


Picture of Carrie Sakai Carrie Sakai, Psy.D., is the Assistant Intern Training Coordinator at C&PS. She is also the co-chair of SafeZones@SDSU and coordinates the Safe Zones Ally Training Program which serves to create a welcoming campus climate for LGBTQI students, faculty and staff through education and advocacy. A licensed psychologist, she obtained her B.A. in Psychology from San Francisco State University and her doctorate in Clinical Psychology with an emphasis in Sex and Gender at the California School of Professional Psychology – San Diego.

Dr. Sakai has a special interest and expertise in working with transgendered individuals. Having lived and worked in the international community in Tokyo, Japan for nearly two decades, Dr. Sakai has extensive experience working with acculturation issues.


picture of Linda Diane Smith Linda Diane Smith, Ph.D. is the Coordinator of the Pre-doctoral Internship Training Program at Counseling and Psychological Services. She has specialized in post traumatic stress issues with women and post war veterans. She offers individual therapy to SDSU students, teaches meditation and Bounce Back classes for students on academic probation. Dr. Smith is a graduate of the University of Southern California and is a licensed psychologist in the state of California. She completed a two year post doctoral training experience in the Long Beach Veterans Hospital where she worked with hypnosis and biofeedback for the alleviation of stress and chronic pain.

Dr. Smith has studied Zen Buddhism, Kundalini Yoga, and for the last 15 years has studied the mental training methods of the Tibetan Buddhists. Her 45 year meditation practice informs her teaching of meditation and stress management strategies to SDSU students.


Picture of Douglas Thompson Douglas Thomson, Ph. D. has been employed at Counseling & Psychological Services since 2006. He immigrated from Canada to the U.S. in 1996, and obtained his doctorate in Counseling Psychology from the University of Missouri in 2004 with an emphasis in Men’s Issues.

He currently is a trainer for the Safe Zones Ally Training Program, and has interests in the areas of privilege, spirituality, and college student career development. He also coordinates the COPE stress workshop program, and co-coordinates the Peer Education Program. He provides individual counseling to students, teaches Bounce Back classes, and supervises graduate psychology interns.


picture of Leslie Wilson Leslie Wilson, Ph.D. is the co-coordinator of the ASPIRE program and has worked at Counseling & Psychological Services for more than 10 years. She is a developer of the e-CHECKUP TO GO intervention programs, used on over 600 campuses worldwide. She has an expertise in Motivational Enhancement Treatment and trains interns, faculty, and staff in the use of MET with the college population. She also specializes in working with issues of grief and loss.

Dr. Wilson works with the peer education program at Counseling & Psychological Services. A licensed psychologist, she is an alumnus of San Diego State University (and Zura Hall) and the California School of Professional Psychology – San Diego.
