Renewing the Memorandum of Understanding for the Compact for Success

College is the ultimate goal for thousands of students in the Sweetwater Union High School District. On October 12, 2011, San Diego State University, the Sweetwater District and the San Ysidro School District signed an extension to the Compact for Success, a program that guarantees admission for students who meet certain academic requirements.

SDSU President Elliott Hirshman, Sweetwater Union High School District’s Acting Superintendant, Edward Brand and Mr. Manuel Paul, Superintendent of San Ysidro School District signed the memorandum of understanding for the Compact for Success.

Since 2000, the Compact for Success has prepared students for college through rigorous academic courses and support programs. This year, the Compact for Success program is also including students from the San Ysidro Elementary School District, one of the feeder districts into the Sweetwater District.

The current agreement maintains its admission guarantee for students who maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA in required courses known as “A-G” courses. In addition, students must complete these courses with a grade of C or better.

The new agreement, which extends the Compact for Success for students graduating through the Class of 2017, requires that students be enrolled in the Sweetwater District from 7th grade on.

Additional highlights of the agreement include increasing the number of 8th graders enrolled in Algebra, literacy interventions for 7th to 9th graders, additional advanced placement course offerings, increases in the number of middle school science courses and an expanded number of science laboratories in middle and high schools.

“This is a great day for the students of the Sweetwater Union High School District,” said School Board President John McCann. “In partnership with San Diego State, we are continuing to make the dream of college a reality for students in the South Bay.”
