Fraternal organizations have been a core component of the campus community since 1899. Currently there are 45 social fraternities and sororities, including both general and culturally based organizations, represented by four governing councils.
Student Life and Leadership, Fraternity and Sorority Life supports the SDSU community through three general functions: Challenge and assist students as they clarify their values, support the maturational growth and development of students, and act as a liaison between constituents with a vested interest in the SDSU Greek community. The mission of the program states:
Greek letter social organizations at San Diego State University create smaller communities within the larger University environment for the purposes of facilitating growth in the areas of scholarship, personal and leadership development, campus involvement and community service. The creeds and rituals that guide the individual organizations are based on values and ethics that foster the highest ideals and behavior.
Student Life and Leadership, Fraternity and Sorority Life serves as a liaison between the university, collegiate chapters, alumni, parents, national organizations, and the local community to provide educational programs, services and resources toward holistic growth and to support fraternal ideals by challenging members to live according to their creeds and ideals.
