Get Connected by Joining an A.S. Board or Committee

Did you know that Associated Students, the organization that operates the Aztec Center, Cox Arena/Open Air Theater, Campus Children's Center, and Aztec Recreation Center, is a $20-million student-directed corporation? How would you like to be a part of that?

Because of the organization's focus on students, it is important that students have a say in its programs and services. Further, A.S. serves as the student's voice at San Diego State University.

Students have the opportunity to help lead the organization, learn valuable leadership skills, and participate in activities and forums that help shape the Associated Students and the campus as a whole. The easiest way to get involved with Associated Students is by joining one of the boards and committees, or advisory boards. These groups are sub-committees to the overall Associated Students Council, which is comprised of 42 student representatives elected by the student body.

There are a number of different boards and committees from which to choose, each offering unique opportunities for its members. Students may participate in selecting awardees for Associated Students' annual awards event; participating in political leadership training; planning Homecoming week activities; discussing ways to further engage the diverse communities that make up SDSU; or reviewing violations to the A.S. Elections Code. This is just a small list of the many important functions that A.S. boards and committees serve.

A.S. Boards & Committees include:

    • Awards Committee
    • Children's Center Board
    • Cultural Arts & Special Events (CASE)
    • Elections Committee
    • External Affairs Board
    • Facilities Board
    • Finance Board
    • Graduate Student Association
    • Multi-Cultural Caucus
    • Recreation Board
    • Rules Committee
    • University Affairs Board

Associated Students also provides opportunities for students to serve on Advisory Boards. These boards provide guidance to various student service departments across campus. You, the student, are the customer of the university, and it is important that the people who serve you have your best interests in mind. Students who sit on these boards regularly review policies and procedures of the various departments and provide recommendations. Students who want to have a voice in the operations of SDSU should definitely consider joining an A.S. Advisory Board such as:

    • Career Services Student Advisory Board
    • Counseling & Psychological Services Student Advisory Board
    • Cross-Cultural Center Advisory Board
    • Student Activities and Campus Life Advisory Board
    • Student Disability Services Student Advisory Board
    • Student Health Advisory Board

Boards, Committees, and Advisory Boards typically meet weekly for one hour during the fall and spring semesters. The application process is easy, and students of all levels are encouraged to apply!

Once an application is received by the A.S. Government Affairs Office (GAO), the applicant will be scheduled to participate in a brief, informal meeting with a member of the Associated Students Council. The interviewer will have a conversation with the applicant to determine which board would be the best fit.

As we reach the mid-point of the spring semester, it is never too early to start thinking about getting involved next fall! Submit an application today for next fall. Applications and more information are available online at http://as.sdsu.edu/govt/boards/index.html. The GAO can be reached by phone at (619) 594-6555 or stop by our office on the lower level of Aztec Center.
