Let’s Talk About the Common Experience

You spent your summer traveling with Dr. Paul Farmer to Haiti, Peru and Russia via Tracy Kidder’s book, Mountains Beyond Mountains. Now what?

The Division of Undergraduate Studies, in partnership with Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, the SDSU Bookstore, the International Student Center, KPBS and the San Diego Public Library, announces the Common Experience: Mapping the Future, Sharing the World.

The Common Experience is a year-long initiative aimed at building a community among SDSU students, faculty and staff, and the wider community by spurring a common dialogue about shaping your future.

“It’s about taking responsibility for the way our world is going to be formed,” said Maureen Kelley, director of the Thomas B. Day Freshman Success Program.

Be a part of our community by visiting the Common Experience Web site or display case in Manchester Hall, and by participating in these activities:

  • Aztec Nights & Common Experience Movie Series: Films will be featured on Fridays throughout October. They might include “The 11th Hour,” “SICKO,” “The Constant Gardener” and “Invisible Children.”
  • The Graphic Imperative, now through October 10: The University Art Gallery features international posters for peace, social justice and the environment from 1965 to 2005.
  • Tracy Kidder Visit, October 25: Listen to Kidder’s interview on KPBS Radio at 10:20 am then attend his keynote lecture at 2 pm in Montezuma Hall.
  • International Peace Village. November 16: Join the International Student Center noon to 3 pm in Montezuma Hall to learn about different cultures. International students will showcase photos, food, song and dance from 30 different countries.
  • Melody Kilcrease Memorial Essay Contest - November 16 entry deadline: Open to select students, this contest offers up to $500 at Aztec Shops for the best essays reflecting Mountains Beyond Mountains.
