“Zombie Prom” at SDSU

logo for Zombie Prom“Zombie Prom” is a new musical – think “Grease” meets “Little Shop of Horrors” – where girl meets boy, girl loses boy, girl gets zombie. Set in the 1950s at Enrico Fermi High, ‘Toffee,’ played by SDSU student Maeve Martin, falls for ‘Jonny,’ a boy from the wrong side of the tracks, played by SDSU student Joseph Almohaya.

Great story, music and costumes make this SDSU production a must-see this Halloween season. Appropriately, the last showing of “Zombie Prom” will occur on Halloween, October 31.

Students may purchase tickets to “Zombie Prom” at the discounted rate of $13. For ticket information, call SDSU’s Performing Arts Box Office at (619) 594-6884, or visit the Box Office located outside Don Powell Theatre.

Meet one of the stars of “Zombie Prom”

Name: Maeve Martin
Character: ‘Toffee’
Major: M.F.A. musical theatre
From: the San Francisco Bay Area

A self-described sports kid and athlete, Maeve began shifting gears toward acting while she was in high school and has been captivated by theatre ever since. Being able to act, sing and dance – also known as a triple threat – is required of all musical theatre actors and actresses.

“Theatre is that something that I’m passionate about. It’s that something that anyone can find in their life – it could be business or nutrition or helping animals – that no matter how difficult it is at times or how hard you have to work – it’s worth it,” she said.

Does stage fright linger when performing for audiences of more than 500 people? Maeve says not so much.

“When I was younger I’d get nervous. But now, when I get up in the morning, it’s ‘let’s do this.’ ”

Maeve left northern California and ventured to SDSU to pursue a graduate degree in musical theatre from the School of Theatre, Television, and Film. SDSU’s M.F.A. degree in musical theatre is one of only four graduate programs in the nation and the only one on the West Coast to offer a course of study in musical theatre. “With this program I’ll also have the credentials to teach at the college level.”

Just last month, Maeve wrapped up the last production she starred in – which took place aboard the U.S.S. Midway – playing the heroine role of ‘Nellie’ in “South Pacific.”

In 2008 she will graduate from SDSU, and will make the next ‘big move’ destined of all aspiring actors and actresses – New York.
