Shh! Noise Reduction Ordinance Effective April 30

Due to complaints from homeowners in the College Area, the San Diego City Council voted in March to approve a proposal that would allow San Diego Police and the University Police to give out administrative citations to residents in homes who have received complaints of noise. The citations may result in fines of up to $1,000.

The proposal will be active in the College Area from April 30 to October 31 for a six-month trial period. The fee can also be imposed on property owners who do not try to mitigate noise complaints.

People who receive citations will have 10 days to pay their fine but they can appeal to an administrative hearing officer.

In 2006, the San Diego Police Department responded to more than 1,600 nuisance rental property calls in the College Area.

“Nuisance rentals are just as much a problem for San Diego State University and for our students, faculty and staff as they are for the other citizens of the region,” said SDSU President Stephen L. Weber.

For those problem tenants who are SDSU students, the university may also discipline them for violations of the "Standards of Student Conduct."
