César E. Chávez Holiday is March 30
“The end of all education should surely be service to others.”
The State of California established an official holiday to honor César E. Chávez, a native Californian and labor leader dedicated to equality and service. The holiday is intended to promote service to the community and is to be celebrated on March 31, in honor of Chávez’s birthday, or the appropriate Monday or Friday when that falls on a weekend. This year, César E. Chávez Day will be celebrated on Friday, March 30.
Most colleges and universities will be closed to honor the César E. Chávez holiday. Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to participate in some sort of community service.
Most K-12 schools do not close, but instead focus on curriculum that honors education and service. To aid schools and teachers, the California Department of Education has created a Model Curriculum for César E. Chávez with background information about the law, contacts, curriculum development and attention to standards.
In addition to the holiday honoring César E. Chávez, San Diego State is sponsoring the fifth annual César E. Chávez luncheon, which will be held on Friday, April 6 from 11:30 am 1:30 pm in Montezuma Hall.
