Tony Gwynn 2007 Classic

Saturday 3/10, PETCO Park

The Aztecs, in conjunction with the San Diego Padres, will host a collegiate doubleheader at PETCO Park on Saturday, March 10, as part of the Tony Gwynn 2007 Classic. A special ceremony between games will be held to honor Gwynn, who was recently voted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame after a standout 20-year major league career.

SDSU Students may purchase $10 tickets with current Red ID (no limit) at the Aztec Center Box Office starting Monday, Feb. 26.

Oklahoma faces USD at 3 pm., followed by San Diego State vs. Michigan at 7 pm. Between games, at approximately 6:30 pm., the ceremony honoring the Aztec head coach, featuring special guests and video tributes, will be conducted.

A special commemorative hat, the first item commemorating Gwynn's Hall of Fame election, will be given to the first 15,000 fans at the game. The cap will only be available at this event.

Gwynn, who is entering his fifth season as SDSU’s head baseball coach, was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame on Jan. 9, receiving 97.6 percent of the 545 ballots cast. Gwynn, who is entering his fifth season at the helm of the Aztec baseball program, was a 15-time all-star who had a .338 career batting average, the 20th highest in major league history. With 3,141 base hits, he batted over .300 every season except his rookie year of 1982 when he hit .289.

The twin bill is part of the weekend tournament featuring four teams that have been ranked among the preseason top 50 by Baseball America. On Friday, March 9, USD will host Michigan at Cunningham Stadium at 2 pm, while the Aztecs will face Oklahoma at 6 pm at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The tourney concludes on Sunday, March 11, at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
