SDSU Students, Faculty and Staff Participate in the Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade

More than 300 SDSU students, faculty and staff, along with one decked-out dog, participated in the 27th annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade in downtown San Diego on January 13.

“I am honored to be affiliated with a university that is dedicated to furthering the principles of diversity and equality,” said Vice President for Student Affairs James R. Kitchen. “As stated on the back of the SDSU parade t-shirt, ‘We must learn to live together as brothers or perish as fools.’ My special thanks to the SDSU Martin Luther King Jr. Parade and Black History Month Committee for organizing the event.”

Kitchen, along with the 2006 Homecoming King Andrew Ly, rode as passengers in an SDSU-red convertible sports car driven by President Stephen L. Weber, which led the university’s delegation. A sea of red and black t-shirts, balloons, banners and beads followed, accompanied by the chants “S-D-S-U”.

In spite of the record cold temperatures, the mood was bright and SDSU was well represented.

Associated Students Vice President of External Affairs Khouloud Elmasri rode in a second car, accompanied by members of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, which won the right to ride along in a student-group raffle.

Members of the SDSU women’s track team and water polo team held SDSU banners. Miguel Navarette, the SDSU Aztec Warrior, and Chet “Hard Hat Chet” Harney of USE, an avid SDSU cheerleader, contributed to the Aztec Spirit.
