“Food For Fines” Drive Begins December 4

Do you have an overdue book or long-standing fine at the San Diego State University Library? Soon you can take care of it and spread a little holiday cheer at the same time. The library will be offering an overdue fine “amnesty” to anyone donating a canned food item to the library’s food drive December 4-16.

  • Fines (regardless of amount) will be cleared from your record at a rate of one can per one returned item. For example, if you have five overdue items, you need to bring five cans of food.
  • You can still pay the fine with cash if you don’t want to donate a can of food or other non-perishable item.
  • Only overdue items – not lost or damaged materials – are eligible for the canned food amnesty.
  • Reserve and media-reserve items are not covered.
  • Canned foods must have labels and be in useable condition. We’re particularly interested in soup, canned meats, canned vegetables and fruits, cereals, dried fruits, canned juices, paper and cleaning products, personal hygiene products (soaps, toothpaste, etc.), evaporated and powdered milk, peanut butter, macaroni & cheese, baking mixes, pasta, and rice.

Please bring your overdue book and food item to the main circulation desk on the first floor of the Library Addition. Donating an item of food can also clear fines for books already returned to the library. If you don’t owe a fine, you’re still welcome to donate a canned food item to the drive. At the conclusion of the drive, the food will be donated to the San Diego Food Bank.
