“WORK IT WISELY”

A seminar for students who want to manage their credit

Thursday 3/30

Last year, there were 1.5 million bankruptcy filings in the United States. The fastest-growing group of those filing were young people ages 18 to 24. That’s according to Judge John Hargrove, who ought to know. He’s the chief judge of San Diego’s federal bankruptcy court.

“Unfortunately, too many of our young people are financially illiterate,” Hargrove says.

He sees first-hand how easy it has become for Americans, especially younger adults, to be overwhelmed by credit card debt. That’s why, in addition to his work on the bench, he established the Credit Abuse Resistance Education (CARE) program in San Diego.

The program is part of a nationwide effort designed to inform consumers of the risks of credit card abuse and the financial dangers of assuming too much credit debt. It provides helpful advice for avoiding credit debt and real strategies for climbing out of debt for those already in over their heads.

Judge Hargrove will bring his debt-prevention message to the San Diego State University campus Thursday, March 30 at 6 pm in the Athletics Hall of Fame Auditorium. He’s the featured speaker in a seminar entitled Work it Wisely – Managing Your Credit, an event sponsored by the SDSU Alumni Association’s 20/30s Alumni.

Although everyone is welcome to attend the free event, Judge Hargrove will target his remarks toward students and younger alumni. He believes the best way to prevent credit card abuse is to educate young people about how best to manage their credit.
