Associated Students Hears Your Suggestions

“There’s no place for a bunch of students to really hang out at San Diego State.” “We need more food choices in Aztec Center.” “It would be nice if there was another Aztec Recreation Center (ARC) on the east side of campus.” “The campus needs more wireless access points, especially in the student union.”

The student body leaders have listened and in response are moving forward with a referendum, which is an advisory vote by the student body, in the hope of getting your approval to slightly raise fees to expand and improve your student union – Aztec Center – making it bigger and more modern.

San Diego State’s student body has simply outgrown Aztec Center. The center was originally built to serve less than 15,000 students and now serves more than 34,000 – a number that will only grow over the next 20 years. Associated Students enlisted the help of several groups to survey over 700 students and hold many focus groups to get your opinions on what was missing from the student union.

Also, some of what you’d expect in an up-to-date student union is missing from Aztec Center. The current expansion and renovation proposal calls for, among other things, the addition of lounges and study areas open 24 hours a day to provide students with a better place to hang with friends and classmates. This space would have computers available for student use, free wireless access and even the resources necessary to print your work. In addition, the new and improved student union would also have a multipurpose theater that could be used by student groups for no charge, an expanded food court and retail area, as well as a fitness center – essentially a mini-ARC.

Look for more information on the AS Web site , and in The Daily Aztec. The referendum vote will take place March 8 & 9 through eVote on SDSU’s WebPortal.
