Get Involved – Join AS Council!

As the spring semester approaches, it’s time to start thinking about and planning for next year. What classes do you have to take? What clubs or other activities might you like to get involved in?

Associated Students government would like you to consider becoming involved in the AS Council. AS Council is the group that helps to decide how AS’ $16.1 million budget is spent, represents the SDSU student body as a whole at the state and national level through lobbying for student interests and is one of the groups that helps to plan and authorize the money for some of the programs you might already enjoy such as Homecoming and Spring Fiesta!

If you think that maybe you’re not the right “type” to be in student government, or wonder if you’ll fit in, consider these facts:

  • You don’t have to have been on Council before to be a successful member. Less than half of the current AS Councilmembers held a seat on the council last year. In fact, only 43 percent of the people now on the board served a previous term.
  • You might already know someone who is a member of the AS Council – 67 percent of those now holding seats are members of at least three other student organizations. It’s a diverse group of people with diverse interests.
  • Speaking of diversity – half of the AS Councilmembers speak at least one language other than English.
  • Think you’re too young or too new to SDSU to be in student government? Consider this – 35 percent of council members are on track to graduate in 2008 or later, which means that about one-third of the AS Council is new to San Diego State.

Think you might be interested in getting involved? Stop by the AS Government Affairs Office or call (619) 594-6555 and ask about how you can become a member of student government. Elections for the five executive officer positions and the council seats are scheduled for early April, so start planning now!
