7 Tips to Fit It In

By Lauren Thayer

Sadly, my story is all too common among my fellow SDSU students. I came here four years ago as a freshman I was in fantastic shape. I was forewarned of the “Freshman 15,” but assumed it was some urban myth. After months of partying, dozens of late-night carne asada burritos and too little self-control, I learned the “Freshman 15” is no myth.  I experienced first hand the shock of the “Freshman 15,” which became the “Sophomore 15” and would have raged out of control unless I did something about it.

I made up many excuses such as:

  • Basketball, stationary cycling, yoga, and weight training are a few of the activities available at the ARC."I don’t have time.”
» The ARC is open 24 hours.
  • "I can’t afford a gym membership.”
» The ARC is only $14 per month.
  • "It’s too inconvenient.”
» The ARC is usually closer than you think.
  • "I’m stressed out and too busy.”
» Exercise is proven to relieve stress.
  • "I don’t know how to exercise correctly.”
» The ARC offers free group exercise classes with knowledgeable instructors and an online fitness catalogue

I couldn’t understand how others had time to go to the gym.  Finally, after two years, I asked one of my friends (who is busier then I was), “How do you have time to workout?”  She explained that she doesn’t have time, she makes time

Here are some tips on how you can fit exercise into your busy schedule:

  1. Write “exercise today” into your weekly planner.
  2. Wear your exercise clothes to school.
  3. Design a 30-minute circuit regimen using a combination of machines and free weights; this saves time.
  4. Exercise during non-peak times. Schedule your exercise before 4 pm or after 9 pm.
  5. Read textbooks while doing cardio.
  6. Whatever time you can dedicate to your fitness, do it!  Even if it’s just for a half-hour.
  7. Pick up your pace when you walk to the ARC to treat it as part of your warm up.
